Katie Couric's Notebook: Iran
There's something far more explosive than uranium contained within Iran's borders....a weapon so awesome it could change the face of an entire region.
That weapon: the people of Iran.
This week marks the 31st anniversary of the Iranian Revolution...and the creation of an Islamic Republic.
The clerics in power promised those people heaven....but created a hell on earth...as Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji said.
They silenced dissension, suppressed the freedom of information, and persecuted religious minorities.
There are widespread protests planned for Thursday in Tehran. Western leaders have an opportunity to express support and solidarity with the voices of change in Iran.
President Obama has called on Iran to unclench its fist, so that the U.S. can extend a hand. The Iranian regime has failed to do so...but a hand must still be extended...to those people yearning to shed the veil of darkness...and step into the light of a freer society.
That's a page from my notebook.
I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.
