How will a Latina woman from the Bronx interpret the words of a bunch of old white guys called the Founding Fathers?

That's the Cliffs Notes version of the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

For Democrats like Senator Patrick Leahy, hers is a success story, "for which we all can take pride."

Some Republicans meanwhile are questioning if that pride leads to prejudice. This week several of them will cite this quote: "A wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life and those life experiences."

Was that empathy or was it politics?

Her confirmation is nearly foolproof given the Democrats' control of the Senate, but it will be very interesting to hear how she answers the questions and how the conversation moves from her quintessentially American story to how she'll apply the rule of law for all Americans.

by formatrix July 15, 2009 6:17 PM EDT: As a Christian I would be more interested in this woman's impression of Sotomayer's position on the "intelligence of Jesus Christ and His teaching concerning what should be done concerning unborn children in the womb. Second I am interested in Katie Couric's own take on just what is "Good News" which you all now claim your program entails. That which is ultimately "good" must be something which is of eternal benefit for all concerned. This is not opinion but Truth, something that should matter to Couric both personally and Professionally especially now if you are going to claim something is "good" about your news. Further criteria for "good" is that it is something which perpetuates and promotes conditions of temporal or civil liberty which enable people to do things that are good which includes let people know that belief in Jesus as the Son of God is a means of eternal life. That is the BEST Good news and I can't see why Katie Couric would settle for promoting what is less than that. If it's good news she wants to report let her go to work for CBN or EWTN or start her own program and report on tragedies that are examined for how they could have been averted had people been living in accord with God's Word. Now that's something nobody's doing and it needs to be done in a responsible and realistic manner by someone with great reporting talents and skills and... Whadya' say, Katie?

You failed to mention that Goldman Sachs was one of the causes of not only this recession but every recession since the Great Depression. Also, why does every news program have an episode glorifying our military boondoggles across the planet, especially in the Middle East?
