New Sarah Palin Clip: Keeping An Eye On Putin

Sneak Preview
Last night, we showed you what Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin had to say about the economy (in case you missed it, she said we're at some risk of repeating the Great Depression). Tonight, we'll show you what Katie asked her about foreign policy - and where Palin said she stands. First, a little taste of what's to come.
(CBS)
Katie Couric: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

Sarah Palin: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and, on our other side, the land-boundry that we have with Canada. It's funny that a comment like that was kinda made to … I don't know, you know … reporters.

Couric: Mocked?

Palin: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.

Couric: Well, explain to me why that enhances your foreign-policy credentials.

Palin: Well, it certainly does, because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of. And there…

Couric: Have you ever been involved in any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

Palin: We have trade missions back and forth, we do. It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right next to, they are right next to our state.

Ms. Couric, during the interivew CBS network put the frosted soft look on your face (did you know that?), then put the standard High Def look on VP Palin (she looked much better). Then you put your glasses on half way through the interview to make yourself look smart, only a stupid person would have thought so. VP Palin, may you look like a fool with wrinkles, but don''t worry your days are numbered at CBS. They want a younger woman who doesn''t require special effects. CBS do everyone a favor and report the news not your opinion.

Votefreedom, you are an idiot reality denying fool who cares only for a party no matter what versus caring what is good for this country. Wake up and get your senses checked.

"Way to go Sarah! You put Couric in her place. You''''re a brilliant woman. I''''m actually surprised you had an interview with this obviously biased liberal. Great answers on Russia, Pakistan and their wonderful President, and Israel. Keep up the great work Sarah!" - Votefreedom...

Votefreedom, did you watch the actual tape of this interview or did you keep it on pause and never hit play? Or did you turn the volume down? Please let me know, I want to make sure I heard Palin''s words correctly...

It really seems to me that there is no one great ticket for this election. All things considered, I think no one that votes is voting FOR anyone...they''re merely voting AGAINST what they consider to be the greater of two evils.
With that in mind, let me say I''m voting...against John McCain and Sarah Palin(mainly Sarah Palin)

On Russia, Palin was asked a number of questions about it, including what insights its proximity gave her. So she would about its proximity, and part of the answer was cut off. But, of course, her first thought would be to remark that Alaskans, unlike the rest of the country, have this powerful adversary right on their doorstep (which was a real concern during the Cold War). Anyone in Alaska would be conscious of that, and politicians and military and anyone in public trust have to have that in their mind. Just the other day Canada was concerned that Russia is trying to flex its muscles towards them and boosted their military alertness.

Couric says Palin has cited Alaska''s proximity to Russia as foreign policy experience. Really? No! As an AP story says, that idea comes from the Charlie Gibson interview. READ THE TRANSCRIPT at ABC and see how much was distorted, especially by cutting things out or misquoting Palin (like insisting on the Iraq war thatshe had said "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God," and "There is a plan and it is God''s plan," when ACTUALLY she said, "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God. That%u2019s what we have to make sure that we%u2019re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God%u2019s plan.%u201D In other words, pray that U.S. is making the right decisions in God''s eyes.)
