It was truly an awesome sight. An adorable 9-year-old girl in a red dress, singing at the opening ceremony in Beijing.

Her crystal-clear rendition of "Ode to the Motherland" was rivaled only by the brilliant fireworks display behind her. But the performance was bogus.

Little Lin Miaoke lip-synched, ala Milli Vanilli. Yang Peiyi, the girl who really sang it, got none of the glory ... until today.

What message does that send to that little girl and women everywhere. I can no longer watch the olympics.; Reply to this comment


by shylove2 August 13, 2008 2:45 PM EDT: Finally a little bit of the Chinese underbelly showed itself last night with the astonishingly blatant underage womens gymnastic performance. One of the US contenders, to her credit, was so visibly angry to be subjected to blatant authoritarian manipulation that she could not even compete with a bright smiling face. The Chinese people of course overlooked this and the obvious underage out of sincere respect for how good the prepubescent gymnasts were.
There is a lesson here if you want to learn it. Visualize Colin Powell before the United Nations giving our obviously preposterous claims and irrelevant evidence with non other than George Tenant, Mr. CIA, scowling in the background. Presenting something the world all knows they can''t do anything about and which the US oblivious public swallows hook, line, and sinker.
It always gives one a sinking feeling to see authoritarian power push an agenda one can do nothing about but one thing is for sure some people around the world feel like our Olympic gymnast! The difference is, we caused hundred of thousands of lost lives all they did was dirty a glamorous Olympic moment. We also have the feeling in the pit of our stomachs that there are more things going on that we don''t know about for example in restraining Tibetan dissent, things you shudder to think about and we also know so are we. We might want to contemplate the direction we are going before it is too late and we set out on the crash course of history.; Reply to this comment
