Vaccine Watch: Gardasil Side-Effects?

Yesterday I spoke to the families of young women who believe the Gardasil HPV vaccine may have – or did in fact – cause their child's serious illness. One of the cases involves a now 18-year old young woman named Amanda.

Amanda's parents say she developed a serious reaction to Gardasil after her first dose last summer. It began with soreness where she received the injection. The soreness eventually travelled down her arm, her legs, and led to a horrible autoimmune myofasciitis that is so painful Amanda had to go on morphine for the pain.

She was transformed, through the illness, from a high school varsity sport athlete to a chronically ill person who takes a handful of pills a day just to keep her illness tolerable. When she goes off the medicine, the excruciating pain and other debilitating symptoms return.

One thing that's different about Amanda's case than some of the others is that both of her parents medical doctors who didn't think twice about having their daughter get the shot – but are now second-guessing themselves. They call their daughter's illness after Gardasil "a very sobering experience." Amanda's dad says, "as the father of three girls, I've had to ask myself why I let my eldest one get an unproven vaccine against a few strains of a nonlethal virus that can be dealt with in many more effective ways. It's not like they are at high risk. It was the regrettable acceptance of the vaccine party line that [mis]led me."

Merck, which makes the vaccine, the CDC and the FDA all say it is safe, effective, and important. Speaking of more than 8,000 adverse event reports and more than a dozen deaths, the CDC told CBS News, "we have found no connection between these deaths" and Gardasil. "We still recommend the vaccine and feel it is an important vaccine for the health of women. There are about 20 million people currently infected with HPV. Women have an 80 percent chance of developing HPV by the time they are 50. HPV is most common in people in their late teens and early 20s. Because the vaccine is a preventative and not a cure, it is important that the vaccine be given prior to beginning sexual activity. About 11,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and 3,600 will die. This vaccine prevents four viruses that account for about 70 percent of cervical cancers."

The CDC says it is conducting its own analysis of Adverse Event Reports on Gardasil. Of 7,802 reports after Gardasil vaccination in the U.S. as of April 20, 2008, "Less than 7 percent reported adverse events were considered serious, about half of the average for vaccines overall. Again, a report to (the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) does not mean there is a connection between the vaccine and the report. It means the event took place following vaccination."

The CDC has acknowledged fainting problems after Gardasil vaccination and has recommended that doctors keep vaccinated patients in the office for 15 minutes following the injection. You can see the CDC's HPV VAERS reports here.

The FDA agrees with the CDC and sent CBS News an email with some "important points" including:
  • We are not surprised by the number and type of reported adverse event cases following Gardasil administration since it was approved.
  • We are monitoring the safety of the HPV vaccine very carefully, and the only safety signal identified to date is syncope, or fainting. (A safety signal refers to a concern about an excess of adverse events compared to what would be expected to be associated with a product's use.)
  • Syncope, or fainting, is a common event occurring with needle injections and vaccinations, especially in adolescents. Some vaccinees who fainted were injured when they fell. On October 1, 2007, FDA approved a revised label that added a "Post-marketing Reports" section that included syncope, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Deaths and serious reports (operationally defined as an event that resulted in life-threatening illness, hospitalization, prolongation of hospitalization, persistent or significant disability, and congenital anomaly/birth defect) are followed up by telephone to obtain additional information about the event and the patient's prior medical history.
  • Most adverse events (94 percent) reported to VAERS for Gardasil were not serious and included reports of syncope, pain, headache, nausea and fever.
  • Passive surveillance systems such as VAERS are subject to many limitations. True associations will inevitably be underreported, to an unknown extent. Other adverse events might be expected to occur coincidentally after vaccination. It is problematic that temporal associations will be reported, often with little data to evaluate any causal connection with the vaccine. This inability to obtain precise numerators coupled with inadequate denominator data means that incidence rates cannot be determined. Although the number of doses distributed is available to the FDA we do not know the number of doses actually administered or the demographic distribution of those receiving the vaccine. Reporting of unconfirmed diagnoses is common, and on follow-up initially reported diagnoses are not uncommonly found to be inaccurate. For purposes of evaluating the possible causal relationship between an event and a vaccination, a particularly important limitation is the lack of a direct and unbiased comparison group from which to determine the incidence of the same type of adverse events among people who have not been vaccinated.

  • There is likely still a lot to be learned about the ultimate benefits and risks of this relatively new vaccine. Since the test subjects are young, it will be decades before a large group of them reaches the age at which women typically get cervical cancer. Which means it may be a long time before we know the vaccine's true real world effectiveness when it comes to preventing cervical cancer. In the meantime, public health officials say they will closely monitor any emerging side effect trends. Hopefully, this vaccine will prove to be the lifesaver everyone would like for it to be.

I got the vaccine years ago and was hospitalized for BRONCHOSPASMS- one of the side effects of Gardasil. It was scary, and I stopped the vaccine cycle. Later my OBGyn reccommended I get the vaccines again saying the benefits outweighed the side effects. A few months after my third vaccine I was diagnosed with ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA- very rare for a woman and for being in my 20's. I never thought the leukemia was related to Gardasil until I met someone who got Hodgkins after their vaccine. Apparently a lot of people out there believe Gardasil is related to LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA. I am not sure what caused my leukemia, but I wonder anyone is studying this corollation.

I have heard that some regions, like Windsor Gardens Rochester NY, had this vaccine scare, and it was all just a hoax, but if CBS is doing something on it, it must be true. Right?

This is some shocking news. I had no idea that vaccines came with such a price to pay and with such an assault on the immune system.

My daughter got the gardacil vaccination in March of 2009. She passed out 20 min. After the injection. With in a few hours she began to run a high fever with headaches and redness at the injection sight. Her arms began to get numb then her legs over the next few months. Next she began to sleep all the time and missing 28 days of school. Over the course of a year she could not consettate on school work and suffered from chronic joint pain, headaches general weakness and uncontrollable bouts of laughing and crying for no reason. By June of 2010 she started having chest pain. In July of 2010 her speech began to become affected and then she began with these strange movements like a toretes syndrome. By the end of july we took her to a neurologist who diagnosed her with chorea. By August she could not talk and the jerking movements were so bad she coiled not dress herself or brush her Haiti. We took her to CHOC in Orange Ca. After a month they were able to diagnose her with antiphoso lipid antibody syndrome sticky blood syndrome. A rare auto immune disease. She has undergone a treatment called plasma phoresis and now chemotherapy. I highly recommend this treatment for any girl that thie drug has affect movements and other strange movements And weakness. We have 4 more months of treAtment but it is really working !

Millions of people died from polio, small pox and many other things that we now vaccinate for. For you to call a parent a demon for trying to prevent their child from catching such a disease is sad. If you feed your child infant formula or have at one time had an ultrasound, you too are guilty. Nobody knows what is good, there is no manual given at birth. I had my daughter vaccinated because there is a history in our family and I was assured by the pediatrician (yes, the baby doctor) that the vaccine was safe. I am now wondering if her sudden illness has something to do with this vaccine and I do not need Crystal to lay blame on me. For all of the young women out there with ongoing symptoms, please let me know what I should look for as a result of this medication. I have made an appointment for my 17 year old daughter but I just know that this will be passed of as something else. My 17 year old daughter was vaccinated over a year ago. Soon after she fainted at school. Along with the faining, she has also been in the hospital for a 2 day stint due to vomiting (so much she had reached the bile of her stomach). The doctor is calling these symptoms hashimoto's, but I am beginning to wonder if there is some kind of doctor/pharmaceutical privilege.

As of March 14, 2010, there are over 17,500 adverse reaction reports and nearly 70 deaths associated with the Gardasil vaccine, and yet, mainstream medecine won't recognize the dangers of this product. Because of this, and the incompetency of the FDA and CDC, more girls will be injured. Soon, it will become so bad that the government will finally have to act.
My daughter has been bedridden for over a year, but I guess she is classified by VAERS as a non-serious adverse reaction. She has not recovered and there has been absolutely no follow-up by VAERS. The reporting system is a joke and there are many doctors that are too busy or not familiar with how to file a report. In most cases, the parent of the stricken girl must file the report. Most parents don't realize this and I'm absolutely sure the 17,500 adverse reactions are just the tip of the iceberg.
Let's face it, because Gardasil is a vaccine, the CDC and FDA would open themselves up to much more scrutiny and criticism regarding other vaccines if they recalled the product. They are willing to have more girls injured and killed instead.

This is an old thread, but I thought I'd post a comment anyway. I came across it when I found out recently that my daughter (now 15) has had recent fainting spells. It was last year that I received a phone call that my daughter was taken to the hospital for evaluation after she had passed out. They were on a trip to Wild Wood NJ at the time.
When I heard the news, I had attributed it to her not eating or getting much sleep (they were up most of the night before the trip), and it was hot.
It wasn't until later that I heard a news story about this vaccine causing girls to pass out. I also saw that this was taking place directly after the injections, so I pretty much dismissed the idea. After all this had happened some 2 weeks after her final series of shots.
Now I'm hearing about other fainting spells (I live separately from them), and I'm looking into this further. After reading some of the stories of girls having reactions after even months, I'm starting to get concerned.
Then and now, I've been trying to attribute these episodes to poor eating habits. After all I have one of those teenage daughters who think their fat but are really thin. But now I'm looking into this further! I wanted to post this here in case other are preforming the same search as me.
I will be mad as hell if I find out that this is related to this drug! Because I had a lot of reservations before signing the release form, and I pressed their doctor for reassurance that this shot was not only necessary, but safe.

I'm 20 years university student, who was perfectly healthy before I took this shot. I received this vaccine in early February 2008. I experienced dizziness and mild headaches a week after the shot. Two weeks later, i began having sleeping troubles for a month (which does RARELY happened to me- esp for a MONTH, i was only getting 2 hours of sleep per 4 days). Still 2-3 weeks after the shot and during my sleeping troubles, I was incredibly sensitive to things, and I was naturally delirious and paranoid as i was losing sleep (whether from Gardasil or not).

Then soon after I started acting strange, I began laughing for no reason in classes, very sensitive to little things, and I thought people were following me. A few days after, I began having very many absurd, twisted delusions. I began saying strange things to my friends which they thought were very out-of-character (personality changes). My parents live overseas and I also said extremely strange things which made them worry and flew over to Australia. It wasn't long until I was dancing/singing in the street and laughing uncontrollably for absolutely NO reason (NOT in a NORMAL/happy singing and dancing way) and my friends were scared of me. I was admitted into the acute psychiatric ward by my Mum, because I was crying, laughing, and having delusions for no reason. It is VERY out of character for me, and the psychiatrists did not diagnose me with any psychological disorders fortunately because it was my first episode, and hopefully the last. This all happened within 1 1/2 months after my Gardasil shot.

I should tell you that I had never had depression, bi-polar, schitzophrenia or any psychological disorders in my life. I have always been a very happy, healthy, and normal girl- until I received this shot and began having a mental episode.

It is TOO RISKY to get this shot, I would NOT recommend it to anyone after reading those horror stories. I hope your daughters get better and may God bless.

I'm a parent and I would like to know from all of you. If there's a group or organization that would look into every case here. From what I been reading on the internet there are a lot of side effects due to the vaccine. 1st dosage 01/08/08. My daughter developed some kind of skin reaction that the Dr said it is linear morphea or scleroderma which is an autoimmune disease the body attacking itself. It appeared on the left arm with swelling of the elbow and fingers. Symptoms: fatigue, pain, forgetful at times, and she is a little depressed 'cause of her condition. She was pretty much healthy before: soccer player, cheerleader, and swimming. Now, she can't be in the sun, and can't do all things like before. 2nd dosage on 07/08/09. If I would of known what I know now. I would not given my daughter the vaccine. I read on the internet that the vaccine contains virus-like particles using DNA technology. Please send me an email to see what we can do against this vaccine. Thank you, and God bless all your daughters.

Wow, I initially thought the symptoms had something to do with the guardisil shot but when I mentioned it to the doctors when going from doctor to doctor they seemed not to be alarmed. My daughter was 14 turning 15 years old when she received her first shot, like the other young women experienced in the begininng, my daughte also experienced blackouts, loss of vision. She was initially diagnosed with occular migraines. The she started have tremors and twitching mostly on one side her right I believe. I would have to go back and look at my nor=tes as we started keeping s diary. She eventually had temporary paralysis of her legs. She also suffered from severe joint pain, chronic fatigue, heart palpatations. My daughter had to deal with severe indigestion and loss of appetite.
We took her to eye doctor, then to pediatrician followed by neurologist and orthopaedist. CT, MRI, EEG bloodwork etc was performed. Everything came back negative. I was convinced until today that she was just misdiagnosed. Doctors said is was stress even though my daughter kept telling everyone she had no stress other than the illness. She only had 2 of the 3 shots becuase I thought the symptoms could somehow be related so we did not fifnish the series. The symptoms continued for an additional 8 months then started to taper off. She still has joint pain, fatigue, occasional black outs, heart palpatations, dizzy spells, the tremors have pretty much gone away but every now and then has a twitch but are not as frequent. My daughter was a level 10 gymnast and I had her stop after her first tremor on the beam. The last thing I wanted was for her to have an accident and paralyze herself. She is planning on starting back in Sept she is trying to work on her cardio to build up endurance. It has been 2 years since she last competed. I thought my daughter just had MS and was exhibiting the first signs and was just going to be diagnosed when she was older as many MS patients are. I will be anxious to see what other information comes to light as others come forward. Thanks again for bringing this to light.
