It's far from a perfect comparison, but there are many similarities between this year's campaign and the one back in 1984.

A tumultuous political campaign in that year illustrates how a frontrunner's status can slip late in the game.

Talking about 1984,

have we forgotten that the First World War started in the Balkans? And provided a springboard for the Second?

You don''t need oil to start the next one. Just sheer, brutal ethnic hatred and a few politicians with no sense.

There are no statesmen left on earth. We need a Bismarck, Katie. We need a Kissinger.
