Staying Out Of The Primary "Bunker"
Mark Knoller is a White House Correspondent for CBS News.
White House press secretary Dana Perino refused at today's briefing to fire back at Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's harsh criticism about the president conducting foreign policy with an "arrogant bunker mentality."
"We're gonna stay out of the primary politics and when there's a nominee – the president will vigorously support that nominee," Perino said.
Asked if she doesn't feel a duty to defend the president's record, she responded: "I will refer you to the Republican National Committee, which during the primary season can answer those questions. As much as I may want to, I'm not going to do it from the podium. I did it once before in Waco – I'll not do it again."
And that was a reference to her response to Sen. Hillary Clinton's charge that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are invisible to President Bush. She called it: "unconscionable that a member of Congress would say such a thing."
UPDATE: When asked, what did the RNC have to say? Nada.
