Dr. Ann Klassen''s study from John Hopkins is certainly an important one, and the finding that African American women in our inner cities are at a higher risk for cancer, largely because of poor diet, is very disturbing. At a time when nutritional health problems are of epidemic proportions in our country, and when links between cancer and diet,including obesity, have been established, it is extremely important that all Americans be educated about the important role that nutrition plays in cancer prevention.

As this study indicates, the interest in learning more about healthy nutrition is there among African American women living in the inner cities, but without the actual educational resources and financial resources to learn more about nutrition in cancer prevention, and without the ability to afford to eat a more healthy diet including more fruits and vegetables, the improvements that African American women in our inner cities can bring to their nutritional lifestyles and that of their families is limited.

It is incumbent upon both governmental public health officials and institutions, as well as private health groups and institutions, that they take a leading role in providing the increased resources needed for all Americans, like the African American women of our inner cities, and that they and we all exert political pressure on our Congressional Representatives as well to increase government funding in this very important area of public health.
