Attorney general nominee Michael Mukasey called waterboarding "repugnant," but would not call the interrogation technique "illegal." It's time for the American people to weigh in.

by ericmichael1 November 3, 2007 1:20 AM EDT: Torture is not the most effective means to get information from a person. A good investigator is one who gets it by building a relationship with his interviewee.

Torture, secret detention and lack of due process (or ANY process at all) is an affront to our nation. It has only played into the hands of AQ propagandists. It has brought us much mistrust all across the world.

Waterboarding? Ineffective. He will tell you SOMETHING, ANYTHING, but will he tell you the truth?

Show your opponent a little respect. It will take more time, but he will tell you the world.

As Michael Mukasey stated, the use of the torture of waterboarding is "repugnant", but he stopped short of calling the interrogation technique illegal, and stated he would need to see specific cases before deciding. But, as Dr. Allen Keller, Director of New York University''s Torture Survivor Program stated, waterboarding is "dangerous, harmful, and utterly terrifying." Its physical and psychological effects upon its victims can be devastastating, and can even result in death. In our great country where human rights and civil liberties are so highly valued, other methods of obtaining information important for the safety of our brave troops should try to be developed which don''t use torture.

It instills a sense of pride in our country to know that the suffering victims of torture of our country and of the world have a treatment center of great excellence and international reknown in the Torture Survivor Program at NYU directed by Dr. Keller. Torture victims from all parts of the world can and do come to this center where they can be thoroughly evaluated and treated, and be helped to overcome the devastating effects of torture.
Kudos to Dr. Allen Keller and his team at the Torture Survivor Program for the healing work they do for the citizens of our country and the world,
