The American success story of Alberto Gonzalez''s rise to the post of AG is an inspiring one. But the problems of the last several months that have plagued his time in office have been unfortunate & troubling, culminating in his resignation alone today.

Alberto Gonzalez''s history of talent, achievement, & excellence will serve him well in whatever endeavor he applies himself in the future. He demonstrated great loyalty & friendship to the President, but perhaps at too high a cost. Although perhaps some political upgamesmanship was involved in the Congressional investigation into the AG''s office, his tenure was marked by doubt even among members of the Republican Party like Senator Arlen Specter. Troubling issues included his possible involvement in the firing of several U.S. prosecutors solely for political reasons, & his controversial policies about torture & wiretapping. There were also serious questions raised about the truth of his statements to the Congressional investigators.

His resignation today comes at a time when the full story & details of what exactly happened are still not completely clear. Executive privilege was invoked as well, which further clouded the picture. Some lawmakers like Congressman Waxman are encouraging further investigation in order to get all the details as to what exactly went on.

And I''m sure that Congress will review the credentials of the President''s next nominee for AG with several fine tooth combs,
