Katie Couric previews tonight's CBS Evening News, which will focus on an increase in violent crimes throughout many major U.S. cities, especially New Orleans.

by petersemkiw June 5, 2007 5:42 AM EDT: Dear Katie, The recent plots uncovered by the Law Enforcement Agencies against Fort Dix and the more recently discovered plot against JFK Airport involving the potential blowing up of gas pipelines, highlight the outstanding undercover work that our law enforcement agencies are doing to protect us from the threats of terrorism. Congratulations and Thanks to them for their outstanding work!

Nuclear terrorism also remains a threat to us as well, and not only through the transport of a hidden dirty nuclear bomb into our country, but also through the potential threats of a catastrophic terrorist attack at our nation's nuclear power plants.

How safe are our nuclear power plants from terrorist attack? Just about 30 miles north of NYC is the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant and how well is that safeguarded? If a nuclear terrorist attack were to occur there, all of New York City would certainly be affected as well.

I didn't hear any discussion of the issue of the safety of nuclear power plants at the Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate on Sunday night, but I think it is an important issue that must be addressed thoroughly by all the candidates,especially in light of these two most recent terrorist plots in the NYC area, and the public should be regularly informed about what measures are being taken to protect our safety in the event of a terrorist attack at a nuclear power plant,or, as advocated by many, the nuclear power plants should be closed.; Reply to this comment


by ericmichael1 June 4, 2007 9:02 PM EDT: Violent crime is up in the Midwest and other traditionally "safe" areas. I believe there may be three reasons for this:

1. We have a generation of children who have not been raised by two parents who love and care about them.

2. Prisons which hold more inmates than any other country on earth have become overcrowded. Many have been released because there is just no more jail space or money to keep them incarcerated. And those released have not benefited from their incarceration. They have simply learned how to be better criminals and how to hate what they view as an unjust system. About 7 out of 10 inmates, statistically, will be recidivist in our country.

3. Massive amounts of money are going to unproven post 9/11 Homeland Security funding while the federal grants which allowed the hiring of more local police officers for law enforcement purposes have been cut.

But I feel that #1 is the most important area to tackle first. If we don't, we will face a generation of rising violent crime rates.
