Today, President Bush announced tough new economic sanctions against Sudan over the continued persecution of the minority population in Darfur. Lets hope he can enlist other nations to join the fight against genocide. Click the monitor to hear my thoughts.

by petersemkiw May 29, 2007 11:01 PM EDT: Dear Katie, Congratulations to President Bush on taking this important first step of imposing tough economic sanctions on Sudan. The situation in the Sudan is intolerable and it is a trajic that the United Nations has not been able to act more forcefully and sooner as well, partially due to China's blocking of a Security Council resolution to send peacekeeping forces there. China deferred to the wishes of the Sudan on this important peacekeeping resolution, and the resolution did not pass. China is hosting the Olympics in 2008 and strong political pressure and publicity should be brought to bear against China's enabling relationship with the Sudan right now and into 2008, until Sudan changes its genocidal policies. Congratulations again to President Bush on taking this first step of tougher economic sanctions against Sudan. I think he will receive support for these economic sanctions from the members of the G8 Summit next month as well.The situation in Sudan cannot be allowed to continue.; Reply to this comment

Darfur is a perfect case of how international peace efforts are becoming harder and harder to coordinate, even in instances when all the world players know something has to be done immediately.

The United States is not a global policeman. But neither is any other power. The United Nations is a shell. The European Union unites only after lengthy debate. With globalization, it seems that the world has become more closer than ever...and more fragmented than ever.

We thought the world was going to end in the 1980's. I think that most of us would go back to a world with stability---even with the Soviet superpower.

In the future, we will have to get used to growing anarchy in the international arena. And to know the wars to fight and the ones not to fight.

Darfur is definately a tragedy that could have been avoided if the global powers had been on the same page.
