Katie Couric's Notebook: Chick Flick
It's a flick by a chick...but it's definitely not a chick flick.
Kathryn Bigelow did what no other woman has done before...she won the Oscar for best director.
In fact, in 82 years, only three other women have been nominated....Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion and Sofia Coppola. How many other female directors can you name? Barbra Streisand? Catherine Hardwicke?
The truth is, there are not that many women in the business. Of the roughly 84-hundred directors in the Directors Guild of America, only 14 percent are women.
Bigelow's win has the power to change perceptions about the kinds of films women can make. If Garry Marshall can direct Beaches and Penny Marshall can direct a film about storming them.
Somewhere in America, a little girl woke up, asked for her first camcorder...and shot the first scene of a lifelong dream.
That's a page from my notebook.
I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.
