Ms. Couric Goes to Washington: the Pictures

Katie's producer, Nicolla Hewitt, snapped some shots of Team Couric in action down in Washington. They flew down last night for an interview with President Bush today. It was a big day, following a very big night. Here's Katie arriving at the White House.

And here she is with Executive Producer Susan Zirinsky, preparing for the interview. Portions of it will air on tonight's CBS Evening News, with more on Katie's first prime time special for CBS, "Five Years: Are We Safer?," airing at 10 pm ET.

I have been a life long viewer of NBC news and I have found myself trying to make it home by 530 to see Katie every night this week. She is good at what she does, is very comfortable, and it shows, especially in her interview with George Bush, I guess she is getting in good with the Bushes now that Rather is gone finally. He needed to go a long time ago. This is a breath of fresh air and to Joe Scaroborough, every nightly newscast has fluff, so back off and leave her alone, you are just jealous !

by androki September 7, 2006 11:00 PM EDT: I don't understand why the set isn't shot in deep focus like "Citzen Kane" was. I find blurry images, for a news set, a distracting waste of time and the ubiquitous simulated "motion" behind Katie to be sorta nauseating.

I don't think the orange is working.

Ten minutes more of hard news by the correspondents that shone so during Bob Schieffer's all too brief tenure (such as Lara Logan and Byron Pitts) would do a lot to "anchor" the program as a central "place" to gather the news.

I'd also recommend round-robin reporting when the circumstances are right such as in the Middle East recently.

I am a long time CBS News viewer and feel like the new show shows a lot of promise but the baby should not be thrown out with bathwater.

You might consider putting the graphics on Katie's right occasionally for deeper impact as Americans scan from left to right.

One last thing the scripted Q & A's, just drop them if a correspondent has a story to tell just let them tell it clearly and consisely. That would free up time for the softer stuff...

by jm1068 September 7, 2006 2:11 PM EDT: Wow-I'm stunned at the ugliness of the comments I just finished reading. Yes, it's a free country and we all have a right to our opinion. However, it's one thing to state an opinion, but another to criticize and insult someone the way you all have. And the person who said something about her deceased husband-have some compassion! You mustn't like Ms. Couric, but there's no need to be so crass.

I think the "Free Speech" segment is a great idea. Whether you like Rush Limbaugh, or any future speakers, he is entitled to have his say. I don't think he's any more inflammatory than some of you dolts.

I am a news junkie, I probably could tell you within 7-8 minutes when a story breaks.(post 9/11 fallout.) But your playing softball in a hardball league. If you want to talk about gravitas, and making things your own, you had the opportunity last night to show us what you had.
You get a C.
You showed up. But man President Bush was able to sidestep, and do what he does with you.
If you want a following, more than just people from your past, you *** well need to step your game up.
You are our voice. Our opportunity for insight. You present to us. We are your audience. You didn't serve us very well last night. He beat you. Now I know what George Steinbrenner must feel like looking at A-Rod.; Reply to this comment

The administration was touting that there was a large decrease in violence. That was a lie. (originally 550, now revised to 1535 as per ABC News). This has nothing to do with how Katie looks. The CBS Evening News is about news and there wasn't any. I had to go to CNN at 10 to get World News.

Bring back old format and make Katie a news Anchor. Leave the interviews to 60 Minutes or Sunday morning shows.; Reply to this comment

I just want to hear UNBIASED NEWS - ask Walter Cronkite, he'll tell you how it's done. I watched Huntley and Brinkly then Cronkite - but was very discouraged with Rather. But this is awful.; Reply to this comment

She's simply not asking and pushing the tough questions: why does Bush continue to link Iraq with Bin Laden, when the majority of the 9-11 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia? Why is he insisting on supporting Rumsfeld, after demonstrating such incredible incompetence and criticism from top military officials? Why are top military officials not held responsible for Abu Grab? How does Bush feel about "Mission Accomplished" Why is there no discussion on the search for Bin Laden? THow can we "win" this type of "war". The interview is so soft it's a total joke. She's acquiesces to Bush like she's at a dinner party, in a manner that Walter Cronkite or Barbara Walters never would have. And let's not forget that this is simply Katie "reading" the news. So much for "in depth journalism." Sorry but I'll stay with the BBC and CNN.; Reply to this comment
