TiVo or Not TiVo: That Is The Question

We got word this morning of a glitch in TiVo land.

It seems that anyone who has a one-year subscription to TiVo, and who programmed it for the CBS Evening News last night, got a surprise.

They got diddly.

Apparently, TiVo did not realize that "The CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer" had become, overnight, "The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric."

Anyone who encountered this problem should try re-programming your TiVo.

Or using a VCR.

Or maybe, just watch "The Evening News" the way God intended: at dinnner time, on a tiny black and white Sylvania, over a TV tray.

We have become a nation of instant gratification, when it come to food, money, children and many others. Howeverwhen it comes to the long term safety of this country we will have to work and pay our dues, so that our children will be able to enjoy it with thier children. I tip my hat to Katie by tackling the tough issues and helping me to remember 911 was devistating for everyone, not only those who lost loved ones. Great Job! by mikey1atl September 6, 2006 11:05 PM EDT: My Comcast DVR worked just fine last night and is set to "series record" the CBS news with Katie Couric every night. : )

A couple of questions/comments. Why is the news not in HD like my local news channel? Yes, it is on the HD channel, but the screen size is the smaller and picture not as good. For a news show of this caliber, it should certainly be in HD!

Also, I do like the format of the show. It reminds me of the PBS style a bit during the early segments adding more "meat" to the stories. However, I am still a bit taken back by the number of "human" interest type stories. I liked the guy that "clicked" tonight and found the story interesting, but all the other stuff on both sides of it were a bit lacking. More news in the format you are using, a bit more depth to the "highlights" segment or whatever it is called, and then one strong human interest story like you did tonight!

by anythoughts September 6, 2006 10:56 PM EDT: I think it is great that a very talented woman has been given the opportunity to anchor the evening news. I was disappointed to see Elizabeth Vargas leave ABC and I am hopeful Katie will be able to successfully fill that void.

I think some things need to change about the program as I ended up setting the DVR for Charles Gibson. I found the CBS newscast boring. I think that Katie needs to move through the segments faster as the point of watching the evening news is to get a %u201Csnip-it%u201D of the days events. The segments dragged on about topics that did not interest me (ie. 911 five years and the opinion segment) and I felt that I was missing more pertinent information about the day%u2019s events. Katie spoke too slowly and could not hold my interest. I did not end up watching the entire program.

I am hopeful that adjustments will be made before the viewers go back to their traditional programming. I would like to see Katie become as successful for the evening news as she was for the Today show.; Reply to this comment


by garyyyy-2009 September 6, 2006 10:26 PM EDT: I don't care whether the anchor is a man, woman, or a talking parrot; I just want NEWS. But CBS' new format SUCKS for several reasons:

1) I want NEWS--not Andy Rooney-style audio blogs.
2) I want REAL NEWS--not Accesss Hollywood photos of celebrity kids.
3) I want CURRENT NEWS--not 50-year-old photos of celebs no one really cares about.
4) I want TRUE NEWS--not segments about how fictitious newscasters sign off fictitious news shows.
5) I want RELEVANT NEWS--not an anchor rambling on about what should she say (to sign off). If Catie has to ask on-air what she should say, she shouldn't be there.

Whether it comes from Dan, Catie, Walter, or a trained talking parrot...you promised us NEWS!
So DELIVER!

most current events.
President Bush was given a PR opportunity with no critical commentary. Next we're having Rush. It seems there is a new Republican sway.

by aywho September 6, 2006 3:47 PM EDT: I wanted to write and let Katie know that in my opinion, her debut was fantastic. Katie continues to wow her audience with her beautiful personality and her professional attitude that she has always maintained in her years of journalism and on screen presence.

After decades of stern and highly pompous anchors, Katie brings a breath of fresh air to an industry that has always maintained a stiff upper lip even when it was ok to lighten up.

The Today Show was an excellent launching pad for this lady of such genuine qualities and public appeal. She fit into that genre just like a veteran and has now proven that she can be colorful and still present something as serious as world news, to her audience.

I wish you many years of success which I am pretty sure wont be easy, but based on what we have seen for so many years, you have the stuff journalists are made of and within a short time, you should have the country in the palm of your hand just like you did on Today.

Watch out for the lions, tigers and bears in the media. They may not like you invading their domain, but frankly, I think you have come home.

Congratulations again. Wear your crown like you were meant to.

by jaydro September 6, 2006 3:16 PM EDT: You shouldn't blame TiVo but blame the people providing schedule data, Tribune Media Services, or perhaps the CBS people providing them with CBS info. Someone elected to have the weekend CBS News keep its name and the old every-day series ID metadata (which is hidden from users), while the weekday news got a new name and ID. The folks are ABC were able to handle their weekday name change without mucking with the series ID so that folks with TiVos got Charlie Gibson without having to create a new Season Pass.; Reply to this comment
