Halberstam Killed In Bay Area Crash
The journalism community is today mourning the death of legendary journalist David Halberstam, who was killed in a car crash yesterday morning in California on his way to an interview. There are a whole bunch of remembrances out there today; head here for a nice roundup. I've dug up an "Early Show" interview from 2003 with Halberstam in which he discusses his book "Defining A Nation: Our America and the Sources of Its Strength." You can watch it by clicking on the video box.
One of the things he says in the interview is this: "You don't get to be a patriot by singing the songs louder. You get it by giving back…this was a book for people who love America but don't go around shouting about it." Halberstam, whose books included "The Best and the Brightest" and "The Powers That Be," was 73.
