Deadly Attack Involving CBS Journalists A Reminder Of Dangers In War Reporting

Just as we were recently reminded how complicated the war in Iraq is to cover, the news today brings yet another shocking and vivid example of the dangers involved as well. Two CBS News journalists, cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan, were killed and correspondent Kimberly Dozier was seriously injured in an attack on the army unit they were with. According to Reporters Without Borders, a total of 96 journalists and "media assistants" have been killed in Iraq since the start of the war and many others wounded. On a weekend when we honor those who gave their lives in service of the nation we also remember the journalists who have perished covering those conflicts. CBS News President Sean McManus said it well in a statement released today:

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of Paul and James, and we are hoping and praying for a complete recovery by Kimberly. Countless men and women put their lives on the line, day in and day out, in Iraq and other dangerous spots around the world, and they deserve our utmost respect and gratitude for the work they do.
