10 Plus 1: Murphy's Law

(CBS)
He's the longest-serving Executive Producer in the history of the "CBS Evening News." He's covered wars, 9/11 and disasters of all sorts. He's worked on newsmagazines, morning shows and in local television news. He even produced "Siskel and Ebert's" movie-review show. His name is Jim Murphy and he's agreed to stop by and answer our questions – and yours – before he leaves his current post after the first of the year. You know how this works by now, each week a CBS News employee gets 10 questions from us and one submitted by our readers – maybe more if they're good enough. Here's your chance, to e-mail us Jim your questions.

Dear Mr. Murphy, I wish you the best. But, before you go, please do something about the terrible coverage we have been getting here in New Olreans on CBS and national media lately. There is no precident in American history for abandoning a city or region in need after a great disaster. In the 1930's our government embarked in grand and visionary public works projects to save places that today would be written off as "lost causes," by your network and congress. And we are betteer off for having done every one those noble things. My city and region have contributed way too much to the well being of this nation (and we have paid well more than our fair percentage of oil revenues to Washington)to be written off in such a cavalier way. The key projcts we are asking for (category 5 levees and wetlands restoration) are crucial to our future and can realistically provide for us (and the whole country) a safe and prosperous future. We are not a lost cause, but are going to need a sustained committment by our federal government. I don't know if you have spent much time in New Olreans, but if you did, I'm sure that you would come to the conclusion that we are worth saving at all costs. It is up to the media to educate the public in a responsible way about this great impertive of our time. You have an arsenal of expertise at our local affiliate, WWL, here in New Orleans. Perhaps you could team up with them to produce a documentry.
