Job openings jump to a near 3-year high

WASHINGTON - The number of available jobs in the United States jumped in December to near a three-year high, supporting other data that show a brighter outlook for hiring.

The Labor Department says companies and governments posted 3.38 million jobs in December. That's up from the 3.12 million advertised in the previous month and nearly matches the three-year high reached in September.

The report on job openings follows Friday's optimistic employment figures. Those showed employers added 243,000 net jobs in January, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent.

Even with the gains, 13.1 million people were unemployed in December. That means an average of 3.9 people competed for each open job that month, the first time in four years that ratio was below 4 to 1.

How and why do you give the republicans credit for "creating jobs", when all they've done since Obama was elected was oppose EVERYTHING, while doing NOTHING?

I hope this is true but this strikes me as an almost impossible number to develop. My particular NE located division of a Fortune 200 company has over 50 jobs listed in the papers and on the job sites but they just announced internally that they are not going to be filled because of declining sales and eroding profit margins. That the leading indicators showed an upcoming dip in the economy again and they don't want to hire and then layoff in 2 months.

Unfortunately I believe that any one month's economic news is just that...one months economic news and in addition, the issues that are wrecking the economy haven't gone away, the ballooning national debt, the federal governments lack of any plan to deal with that debt. The pending costs of Obama Care adding 3 trillion plus to the national debt between 2014 & 2020. We are still increasing the debt at at a rate of 4.3 billion dollars a day and the current administration hasn't offered one plan to deal with it. The Senate is sitting on over 100 bills that would address some of these issues but the senile Mr. Reid won't let them be brought to the floor. Both parties got us to this point over the years but Obama and the democrats have had 2 years of complete control and 2 years of majority control and have done nothing. Why would one assume they could or would do something if left in power. Its time for a change to anyone else.

Now if only employers would treat American citizens like they do illegals, don't ask for references, experience, school transcripts, don't penalize those who have been unemployed more than 3 months, last jobs worked. Treat us like you do illegals as far as hiring and unemployment will go down to 1.5 percent.

That is fine when there aren't enough employees to fill jobs. In a time where their aren't enough jobs, employers should be asking questions. Employers want people who are capable, dedicated, and trustworthy. Employers might put up with less than ideal workers when they have no choice but to pick from the bottom of the barrel. That is not the case at the moment.
