Batt Humphreys
Batt Humphreys returned to CBS News in May 2011, serving as interim Executive Producer for "The Early Show." In this role, Humphreys oversaw newsgathering and breaking news coverage, as well as programming decisions reflecting a renewed emphasis on delivering news-driven stories with a focus on politics, in line with other CBS News broadcasts.
Humphreys left CBS News in 2007 to devote his time to writing and promoting his debut true-crime novel, "Dead Weight," which won several awards, including the 2010 Palmetto Book Award for excellence in writing; the Independent Publisher Awards 2010 IPPY gold medal for best true crime novel; the Benjamin Franklin Award for best work of historic fiction; and a top award from Foreword Magazine for best historic fiction. The novel was also read in its entirety on NPR in the spring of 2010.
Prior to his departure, Humphreys spent 15 years at CBS News. During most of that period he served as a senior producer for "The Early Show," for which he managed the coverage of some of the most important news stories of the period, including wars in Iraq, Somalia and Bosnia, the elections of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, and the terrorist attacks on September 11.
Humphreys, who was graduated from McGill University in Canada, is a native of Georgia. He began his career in television journalism in the 1980s in Charleston, S.C., before moving to New York to join CBS News. Though he currently lives in New York, Humphreys shares a farm outside Charleston with his wife Laura.
