Palin Emerges with Even More Clout

Most of the candidates Sarah Palin endorsed chalked up victories Tuesday.

And that scorecard leaves pundits wondering whether she'll now train her sights directly on the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

As CBS News Correspondent Jeff Glor reports, .the former GOP vice presidential nominee backed 43 candidates for the House. Thirty of them won, with races involving nine others still undecided.

Her record in Senate races was closer: She endorsed 12 candidates. Seven won.

Though it's been 15 months since Palin stepped down as Alaska governor, she was very much in this election, stumping for candidates across the country, skewering President Obama at every turn.

"My observation of Sarah Palin," says CBS News political analyst Nicolle Wallace, "is that she is one of the shrewdest political figures in our country at this moment. She's also one of the most electric."

Of all the races Palin got involved with, perhaps the most personal was in her home state of Alaska. Her backing of Tea Party favorite Joe Miller propelled him to the ballot in a primary for Senate and past incumbent Republican Lisa Murkowski, whose father Palin beat to become governor.

Murkowski ran as a write-in candidate. The outcome of that highly unusual race could take days to determine.

"When the results come in," says Politico National Political Editor Charles Mahtesian, "I think people will look at that and see that as a reflection of her clout, because she played such an enormous role in defining the terms of that race."

Among the winners Palin endorsed: Nikki Haley for governor of South Carolina, Pat Toomey for Senate in Pennsylvania, and John Boozman for Senate, in Arkansas.

All year, Palin and re-elected Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina were kingmakers in the Tea Party court, supporting winning candidates such as Rand Paul for Senate in Kentucky.

There were some losses, too. In Delaware, Tea Partier Christine O'Donnell was forced to spend part of her campaign convincing voters she wasn't a witch.

But overall, Glor observes, Palin seemed very pleased, punctuating a big night by tweeting, "As always, proud to be American! Thanks, Commonsense Constitutional Conservatives, u didn't sit down & shut up... u 'refudiated" extreme left." '

Asked on "Entertainment Tonight" last week whether she'd run for president, Plain said she would, if there's nobody esle to do it.

And on "The Early Show" Wednesday, DeMint was asked if he could see a Palin-DeMint or DeMint-Palin ticket in 2012.

"I agree with her," DeMint responded. "I would only consider if no one else was willing to do it at this point. Sarah Palin's done a lot of good for the country. She's gone out front and taken a lot of the slings and arrows from the critics. When women or minorities get involved in politics as conservatives, they take a lot of hits from the press. And she's done a lot of good for the Republican Party, and for our country."

Brian: She must have a brilliant PR person working with her. Is that you? Anyway, you say we cannot get enough of her. Well, I was home with a cold for a couple of days and watched a lot of CNN and other news channels and it was "Sarah Palin" this and "Sarah Plain" that and countless images of her Foster Grants ad face and that red jacket she wears 99% of the time. I think her publicity has reached it's saturation point. She's like kitch now.

Palin has about as much clout as a dried up noodle. No person in their right mind would ever follow any of her gold digging empty headedness.

You say no one would follow but her, but millions do. I'm from Alaska, and every time I leave this state and go anywhere else, I am asked, "Do you know Sarah? Isn't she amazing? We love her!"
I will say that the people who follow her, who proclaim their love and loyalty, when asked what they know of her policies, or her stand on anything other than the stereotypical Republican subjects, have no answer. So her followers are as empty headed as she is, but they number in the millions. That makes her disturbingly dangerous.

ELBK: Sarah has marketed herself real well. She knows how to please her supporters and how to drum them up and grow the crowd. She is paid huge sums of money.....NewsMax was saying she made $9,000,000.00 last year. Sarah also knows how to "irritate" the left which fuels the fire and keeps her in the news. It is all genious marketing! She most likely will never run for office.....however she will bait the public that "Maybe?" She is running the Tea Party and has herself entrenched in the Republican Party. She is a threat to everyone, even the old school Republicans that want her to disappear. Not many people good looking or not can keep the flame of interest alive as she does. We cannot get enough of her. She has elevated herself to Rockstar status.

This dingbat Palin couldn't run a peewee baseball team, let alone a whole country. But look, since the Republicans are the ones who created this economic mess, maybe they are the ones to get us out.I They need to stop gloating, stop the stupid interviews and talk shows and get people back to work, IF that's at all possible, and I say that because somebody needs to be honest with America, and I don't think it matters if it's Palin, Obama, Rove, Pelosi... but somebody needs to tell America that a lot of jobs lost in 2008 and since are simply not coming back. When the economy tanked in '08, we lost billions of dollars, and remember we had still not completely recovered from the financial effects of 911, and the devastation of the gulf coast from Katrina in 2005. Kentucky's conservative Rand Paul, hot off a victory Tuesday said himself that government can't create jobs, and as much as I dislike the Tea Party and Paul, I think he's right. Not to mention millions of jobs that selfish, greedy corporations continue to outsource to other countries for cheap labor while Americans are stuck with near double digit unemployment. All of the politicians regardless of party need to put up or shut up.

Nancy Pelosi announced today ON TWITTER that she's going to run for minority leader of the house. I love it! She uses twitter which is exactly what you libs criticize Sarah Palin for! When Sarah does it you say she acts too much like a twelve year old school girl! How do you like it when one of your own does it?

Jealous of her? I can only speak for myself, but I disliked her from the beginning ---- creationism, pro-life, anti-gun control, evangelical.... And her folksy "I'm one of you," manner, her accent - "A-MARE-ica, "A-MARE-icans." I would like to see her run... off a cliff.

Get used to her because it's NOT going to happen! Besides, those are the values that I and most of America like her for! It's time we had someone who fights for the unborn and our children's right to pray and read the Bible in school! I'm also an evangelical and I have a accent, too, as do MANY people in this country! You need to get used to that too!
