Penn State president explains McQueary status

Penn State president Rodney Erickson says Mike McQueary, an assistant coach now on administrative leave who was a graduate assistant when he allegedly witnessed sex abuse at the school in 2002, wasn't fired last week because "legal issues" are in play.

McQueary allegedly saw retired Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a child in the shower in a school locker room.

Sandusky is accused of assaulting eight boys over 15 years, and denies the charges.

Complete coverage: The Penn State Scandal

When asked why Joe Paterno, the iconic Penn State head football coach was fired and not McQueary, Erickson said McQueary's situation was "different." He said, "The board, last Wednesday night, felt that they had to take decisive action, and they did."

"Early Show" co-anchor Jeff Glor asked, "Why was it a different situation, though, if both had information that potentially could have stopped this earlier? Why was one put on administrative leave and one just removed from the position?"

"All I can say at this point is that there are legal issues that are involved," Erickson said.

Glor noted there are three investigations being conducted.Erickson said he hopes to see them completed as soon as possible, so the school can "take whatever corrective actions may be recommended as a result of those investigations."

As for the school, Erickson said "there's ... been the start of a healing process."

When asked if the focus has been too much about the football program and Paterno -- and not on the victims -- Erickson said, "I would certainly hope that the bulk of the focus is on the victims, because there's been so much sadness here at the university over the course of the last week, so much emotion that has been directed toward the victims. Our hearts go out to them."

Just after the announcement that Paterno had been fired amid the scandal, disturbances broke out in State College, Pa., where the school is located.

However, Erickson said students have shown sensitivity toward the victims.

He said, "The fact that our students organized a candlelight vigil to support the victims of child sexual abuse, where 10,000, mostly students, showed up, I think was an excellent example of the real character of Penn State and Penn State students. I think the game that was played on Saturday (Penn State Losta, 17-14 to Nebraska in Penn State's last home game of the season) with the student athletes at the center of the field, kneeling in prayer and reflection and certainly support for the victims of sexual abuse, spoke wonders about the character of all of our students, our fans, and the entire group of 108,000 that were there that day."

McQueery is morally bankrupt. However, the prosecutor needs him as a witness against Sandusky to make the case. In the meantime he will be protected with whistleblower status and receive his pay. When the case is over, he will quietly disppear (with a payoff of course).

I actually suspect that McQueary was a Sandusky's victim also. Hopefully we will learn the truth.

Above was response to:

"I agree with you 100%!!! Something is not adding up here and I have said that for the last week. Besides everything you mention, I don't believe a 10 year old boy COULD just stand there...it's not physically possible. Here's my conspiracy theory: I think McQuery was one of Sandusky's victims as he graduated from State College HS. I think McQuery was trying to stop Sandusky in a "safe" way and thought surely if he "witnessed" this that he would arrested, jailed and unable to cause further harm."

The Penn State Board of Directors got caught flat-footed by this scandal. The local papers reported Sandusky was being investigated for child abuse months year.

Penn State should have got out ahead of this, done their own investigation and had a plan of action.

The Attorney General's office moved at a snail's pace with this investigation. They should have arrested Sandusky over a year ago when victim 1 came forward and let the publicity bring out more witnesses and victims.

Perhaps Attorney General Tom Corbett was too busy running for governor to do a good job on this case.

The U.S. Marshals should take over this investigation. ALL management of Pedo State should be removed and have a independent body. There should be an IMMEDIATE "Do Not Destroy" order given to the entire campus. Everyone, look what's going down! These men are destroying records. The 1%: police, judges, business executives, politicians, corporate media and all covering for each other!!!!!!!

I was wondering, does any have any idea about the combined salary totals of these men involved?

The Whistleblower laws in Pennsylvania PROTECT McQueary from losing his job. That being said- this coward McQueary (who also has a coward father so the apple really didn't fall far from the tree) should resign just out of common decency.

Penn State president Rodney Erickson did not really answer even one of the news reporters questions.

This is good that Paterno's name is being taken off the trophy.
This is good that the Second Mile is being investigated
This is good that CEO, Jack Raykovitz, has resigned.

It is extremely hurtful to all victims of child sex abuse, when alleged wrongdoers are given praise and glory.

We are hoping the anyone who runs an institution, (who enables, empowers, and protects child predators) are watching and realizing this kind of callous and dangerous behavior has got to stop, otherwise they will be held accountable.

We are begging anyone who has seen, suspects or suffers child sex crimes to find the courage and strength to speak up now and call law enforcement immediately. The secrets need to be exposed.

Staying silent is not any option, too many innocent children are being sexually harmed as we speak.

McQueary should have been fired along with the others. His being a graduate student hasn't anything to do with the fact that he witnessed a kid being raped. Rape is a crime and for McQueary to have done nothing like intervening, forcing Sandusky off of the kid, punching Sandusky out, immediately going to the police, etc. is reprehensible. McQueary's actions condoned the crime and perpetuated it. The janitor that also witnessed the attack should be fired if he's still working there as well as prosecuted for being complicit to a crime. No more excuses for adults not doing the right thing.

On ESPN radio, Sports Center Saturday, one host said he sympathizes with McQueary because he was the low guy on the totem pole so if he reported the molestation he would be fired. And they feel sorry for him because he has to have protection now. Look how corrupt and filthy OUR media is!

I do NOT believe Sandusky is the only pedophile in this ring!

me neither. McQueary should be arrested for aiding the molestatin of an innocent child. He aided by not reporting this to the police and tackleing Sandusky and getting help for the innocent little boy. I can only imagine how much blood was coming out of this little child's rectum from this rape. I imagine that there are many more than 8 little boys who were raped. Sandusky with the aide of McQueary killed the souls of these children. Sandusky, McQueary nor Patrone have any morals...they only know football...I will never ever go to another football game again..Sandusky prayed on the little boys who had a poor home life..well Sandusky can and should be put to death for the raping of these little boys. I wonder if Sandusky might have killed a little boy and buried him somewhere. I think the police should investigate all the little missing children anyplace that Sandusky might have been. Also, according to a TV report wasn't there an investigator who has been missing? This whole mess isn't over and more heads will roll....cancel the rest of the football games for Penn State.

Who cares where McQueary was on the totem pole! He actually witnessed the abuse! Why would someone WANT to work for an organization that did nothing to stop the horror? Devil to Paterno & McQueary: "I will give all that you wish for, fame, fortune, recognition and a winning football team, all I want from you is your integrity"

To anybody that supports McQueary:if your child was the victim in this case would you hope a witness would act the same as McQueary, or would you hope they would take some other course of action? I wonder if Mr. McQueary's daughter was the victim if he would be satisfied if a witness acted the same as he did.
There are laws for viewing child pornography, I hope McQueary is charged under those laws and more.

Jeff Flor - excellent interview and questioning of President Erickson. Excellent.

I want Mr. Flor to continue on asking pertinent, relevant questions of President Erickson until this criminal case is all wrapped up and completed. Wherever it leads both the State of Pennsylvania, Penn State and the Federal Department of Education.

No stone unturned Mr. Flor - ask the questions. Demand full and complete AND ACCOUNTABLE answers.

It is deeply disturbing that Mike McQueary is being shielded and protected - anyway you look at it. By the State and by the University. Until that reality is stopped - there is no recognition on any public record of this criminal matter - that Mike McQueary is being told how very, very, WRONG his actions were. Most especially WRONG toward the safety of a specific child he turned away from AND CALLOUSLY REFUSED TO HELP - and from subsequent child rape victims that Mr. McQueary did nothing to protect, either.
