Feds grab granny in moon rock sting

You may want to think twice before selling your old possessions to raise money after hearing the story of a California grandma and her moon dust.

Joann Davis, 74, wanted to sell a tiny piece of moon rock dust that she's owned for nearly four decades. By some estimates, the dust could be worth more than $1 million. But when she tried to make a deal in May, she was taken down by government agents.

CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reported on "The Early Show" that Davis thought she was going to her local Denny's for a simple business transaction -- but then it got ugly.

Davis recalled, "Someone is grabbing me from the back. Now they're pulling me out of the booth and they have a hold of me pretty darn good, and the force was like, unnecessary ... because I'm like 110 (pounds). I'm four-foot-eleven."

Davis expected to sell a tiny speck of moon rock encased in a paperweight she claims was given to her space engineer husband 40 years ago. But, after she contacted NASA to see if it could help her find a buyer, federal agents set up a sting. They suspected she was dealing in stolen government property.

But Davis claims the item is not stolen. "I know it and they know it too," she said. "But how else are they going to credit themselves with how they took it? How do they justify it?"

NASA declined to comment on an ongoing investigation. Yet, five months after being detained and questioned for two hours, Davis still hasn't been charged with anything.

Peter Schlueter, Davis' attorney, told CBS News, "There's no such law that moon rocks belong to the federal government. There are laws about stealing from the federal government and I understand that, and if anybody could show that these moon rocks were stolen from the federal government, that's a horse of a different color, but they haven't shown that."

Davis claims the agents bruised her arm and tailbone during the incident, but the emotional wounds are far worse.

"I felt humiliated," Davis said. "I felt, this may not be proper to say, but I tell you, I felt raped. I really did."

At this point, Davis simply wants NASA to return what she feels is her property, and she and Schlueter are considering legal action of their own.

Schlueter says he doubts federal agents will ever charge his client with breaking any laws, but he's also doubtful she'll ever get the moon rock back.

Mrs. Davis is obviously not right in the head to say she feels like she was raped! That is so inflammatory and disrespectful to people who have suffered through rape. Her attorney appears incompetent in his advice to her and his take on the issue and it's legalities. What is happening is the attorney knows his evidence is insufficient and so he is going to try his case in the court of public opinion and try to get som settlement for his client.
As for her actions, she is old enough to know better! If she is so innocent she never would have been attempting to sell on the black market. The IG office has to demonstrate zero tolerance period in my opinion. These agents were doing their jobs and if they had been rough with poor granny don't you think there would have been other patrons, servers, etc. making statements about how rough they were? Or someone would have whipped out their phone and recorded it? People wake up! She is a shiester! Also, we are seeing bruise pictures five months after the fact have fun authenticating those in court...CBS should be embarrassed at this report as it is thinly researched and really just a sham! We should thank these officers for their dedication and professionalism instead of tearing them down. But I guess a lot of uneducated people believe everything they read and see in the news...

Folks, it is important that the bad guy here is not NASA per se, it is the NASA office of IG, which is pretty much independent of NASA. Paul Martin ( the IG ) is the leader of the storm trooper squad here, and instead of taking the high road and treating this lady with some dignity, his office decided that macho was more appropriate. As a consequence, a lot of GOOD people at NASA get a black eye because this appointee by the President has only half a brain and no common sense. Most NASA folks ( like a lot of us commoners ) still believe in NASA and its potential. Vent, but vent at the right people, it is the only way anything will change for the better. Let Paul Martin know what you think of his little stunt!

The government didn't want someone to have the rock tested and have the people find that it is from earth. Come on, why isn't there more pictures from the moon landing, how did they launch off from the moon to return to earth when it takes so much planning to launch from here???

Our authorities have all gone mad. Why are they all so militant? How dare they rough-handle a 74 year old lady! What message do they want to send to the public??!! FEAR??? Whatever happened to civility?! There is something seriously wrong with authority and whoever taught them to exercise power in such a despicable way.

I grew up dusting one of those same exact "moon rock in a plastic box" paperweight -- my father was an engineer who worked on the Apollo series, the moon launch in particular, and he received such a rock for his part.

I think it's awful what was done to this woman; she should have HER property returned, along with a written apology (not that this will happen).

What federal department were these "agents" from, and what authority do they have to manhandle grannies? There must be a resurgence of gauleiters and brown shirts. I thought I had seen it all. After WWII everyone said of the nazi regime that it couldn't happen here. Well, this is the way it started in Germany (minus the beer hall). Meanwhile Wall Street steals billions of dollars in bail-outs from the federal treasury with no interference from "agents".
