Mega-bucks flow from drug cos. to doctors

A dozen pharmaceutical companies have given doctors and other healthcare providers more than $760 million over the past two years - and those companies' sales comprise 40 percent of the U.S. market.

The numbers come from the non-profit journalism organization Pro Publica, which assembled and continues to update a database on the payments.

The payments, says Pro Publica, are for consulting, speaking, research and expenses on the part of the providers.

Drug companies have traditionally been very tight-lipped about those payments, Pro Publica notes, but, "Over the past two years, companies have begun posting this information on their websites, some as the result of legal settlements with the federal government."

What's more, Pro Publica points out, "Federal law requires that all companies publicly report this data beginning in 2013. That information will be posted on a government website."

With bucks that big flying around, is the quality of care offered by providers accepting them compromised? "Absolutely," said Dr. John Santa, head of the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center.

"Money works," Santa told "Early Show on Saturday Morning" co-anchor Russ Mitchell. "Doctors are human. Doctors who take money from drug companies are more likely to give you an expensive drug or more likely to give you a drug you may not need."

A recent Consumer Reports survey had 72 percent of respondents saying they believe pharmaceutical companies have too much influence on the drugs that doctors prescribe; 85 percent saying they were concerned about drug companies rewarding doctors who write a lot of prescriptions for their drugs; and 76 percent saying they were concerned about doctors providing testimonials or serving as a spokesperson for a drug.

Santa says he'd be reluctant to advise someone to go to a doctor who has that sort of relationship: "The issue is, who are you working for? Me, as the patient? Or the drug company you're taking money from?"

Do the payments result in doctors not giving patients the least expensive drugs in some cases?

"Absolutely," Santa replied. "We know from our studies and others that there are still many opportunities for doctors to prescribe generic drugs and they're not doing it, and one of the reasons is these financial relationships."

Santa pointed to three signs that could tip off patients that their doctor is getting drug company money.

First off - seeing drug company salespeople in a doctor's office. "The last time I was in a medical office," Santa says, "there were three drug representatives in the waiting room. I haven't been back."

Another sign? Free drug samples. "People think a free sample is a good thing," Santa observes. "Well, the expensive prescription that follows it, if it works, is not a good thing. It can be, again, a much more expensive drug than you may need."

Also: Marketing materials in the physician's office. "Doctors who have relationships with drug companies will often have promotional materials, will have information that they give patients that come from the drug company. You should be wary of that," Santa cautioned.

And what if you spot any of those signs?

"First of all," Santa suggested, "you shouldn't hesitate to ask, 'Do you have a relationship with a drug company? Is it your policy and your practice to take money from drug companies?' More and more, I think, it's good for consumers to ask those kinds of questions.

"What you should especially ask, though, is, 'What are my other options?'"

This is a ridiculous article. Go figure, pharmaceutical companies employ physicians. Physicians do work for pharmaceutical companies and get paid for their work. How unethical! Accusations of wrongdoing are made without ANY data to back them up! It's "absolutely" bad for the patient because Santa said so! A handful of doctors make good money from pharmaceutical companies for the work they contract to do. The vast majority of physicians get zilch. The "evidence" of being on the take presented by Santa are ridiculous. The majority of physicians see sales reps and do NOT get any pay for it. Many physicians use educational materials provided by drug companies because they do not have the time and resources to make their own or purchase them from a third-party. The only data cited are lay people's "opinion" of what is going on. There is no hard data, just accusations. This article is entirely bogus.

For those wondering which politicians are on the take -- the ones threatening to cut into the drug companies' business, to tax advertising expenses, to impose cost controls, etc. Articles like this are extortion. Threaten to regulate the business in new ways, get campaign money from the people you threaten, then back off when you get elected. Just like Clinton-Gore did - They talked big time about how much money drug companies spent during their campaigns, then did nothing about it when they got elected.

Makes you wonder how many pills that you are taking are not required but only to get more money from the drug companies for the doctors?

And still people in this country fight universal health care - we're the only country on this Earth without it. No one should have to pay for medicine or going to a hospital - why are these people so selfish in this country. They'll stand on a soap box and say "we're the most powerful and richest country on Earth" you can't be serious.

Its a disgrace even education - many countries in this world education is free through college nowadays people graduating with on average a $100,000 debt hanging on their neck insanity.

In a recent study, the U.S. pharmaceutical industry spent 24.4% of their sales dollar on promotion, versus 13.4% for research and development.
The US and New Zealand are the only countries in the world that allow pharmaceutical companies Direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA). That is the promotion of prescription drugs through newspaper, magazine, television and internet marketing.
Most medical journals are funded primarily by pharmaceutical advertising.
Last year Pharmaceutical companies spend $6.2 million alone in lobbying by the dominant Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), and $4 million spent lobbying the government by the American Medical Association. (Why does the AMA need to lobby???)
In 2010, the FDA drug recall totaled 296 from January through June.
The FDA openly acknowledges that not all effects of a drug medication are documented or even known at the time of approval. This is because safety standards for the drug are performed on small groups of patients over a relatively short period of time.
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) stated that prescription drugs are killing approximately 140,000 Americans a year- the #3 leading cause of death in the US. (And that is for medications that were PROPERLY prescribed AND consumed!) #1 is Heart disease at 616,067 deaths per year, #2 is Cancer at 562,875, and #4 is Stroke at 135,952.
The US ranks 29th in the world for infant mortality rates. (Even behind Cuba!)
The number of Americans killed by medical screw-ups is somewhere between 44,000 and 98,000 every year--the eighth leading cause of death- even by the more conservative figure, ahead of car crashes, breast cancer and AIDS.

The US medical schools have been HIJACKED by the pharmaceutical companies. The ONLY thing your doctor has to offer you is drugs or surgery. So it's not (all) your doctor's fault- they just happen to be the smartest idiot you know!
Your health is 100% in YOUR hands. You MUST eat right and exercise. Or... go to your doctor and take your chances!!! (Maybe just save time and go straight to your mortician!)

I wonder how many and which politicians these pharma co.s pay off?. No joke..ending prohibition and focusing more on education will solve alot of problems.. ALOT of problems.
Many of these "legal" drugs are considerably more dangerous than many of the "Harmful" drugs, our pathetic excuse of a D.E.A. or F.D.A. consider.
IF we ended the prohibition of Marijuana..we'd have plenty of jobs.
and more jail space for the "real", bad guys.
Enjoying your pedophile neighbor yet? yup..that's because of prohibition.
This is not rocket science.
Oil/bio-fuels/plastics, superior clothing materials and building supplies...We SHOULD be selling bio-fuels to the Middle East and SHOULD be providing materials to China and India, and we could be building everything from new strong lightweight cars to the worlds strongest fiberglass and toughest cloths.
But NOOO..we allow cooperate sponsorship of politicians to run our country.
Cooperation's Control our media and our government.Cooperation's with the help of mass media, control everything we buy and many of our very own thoughts.

P.S. I also have serious issues with Pharmaceutical companies making commercials and directing them at a mostly uneducated populous. Doctors and Pharmacists should be prayed upon. not the general public..it is dangerous, and in my opinion, incredibly STUPID and VERY irresponsible of our F.D.A. to even allow it.

"Sicko" and "Sick Around the World" will show you exactly what is wrong with the health care system in the US. Too bad we can't adopt some of the practices from other countries. People would not be losing their homes, etc. because they can't pay their medical bills.

We have the worlds leading rate of OBESITY.

Our people eat & drink CRAP

--------------

Right, and all the CRAP is approved by the FDA...

The Food and -DRUG- Administration.

Do you really believe it's just some kind of "random coincidence" that both Food and Drugs roll up under the same government agency?

Our government needs people to be sick and unhealthy so DRUGS can be sold to them to make appear "healthy" again.

Yet another reason why our US health care system is in such a mess. It's the world's most expensive system by far and the US does not rate well when compared with other developed nations. We need solutions. In this case, doctors accepting major money to prescribe certain medications. They may not be the best or most appropriate but it sure makes them a lot of money. What a mess ...
