Study links sitting around to cancer

A major new study shows a strong connection between sitting around and cancer.

The analytical study, to be presented at the annual conference of the American Institute for Cancer Research in Washington, D.C., finds 92,000 cases a year of breast and colon cancer that can be blamed on physical inactivity.

The study, Dr. Holly Phillips, a general internist, explained on "The Early Show," is based on an analysis of 200 studies worldwide. Researchers found, overall, that physical inactivity raises your risk of having cancer and may be the cause of (more than) 90,000 new cases, specifically 43,000 new colon cancer cases and 49,000 breast cancer cases.

So how much sitting is too much?

"Any sitting is actually too much," Philips said. "Frankly, we should do the broadcast standing up right now, just walking in place. One hour of sitting consistently without standing up in between is too much and may raise your risk of cancer."

She continued, "Most of us sit seven-to-nine hours a day, which is just too much. Ideally, we should work out 30 minutes a day, five days a week. If you can't, you can do little things to decrease your cancer risk. If you take a bus, try to get off one stop early. Park your car at the back of the parking lot. Little things like this can make a huge, huge difference."

Phillips suggests these changes to your daily life:

1. Exercise 30 minutes five days a week

2. Take a brisk walk

3. Get up from your desk

If i get that dreaded dealy condition i sure as heck am not going to get my treatments in the US.How long have they been using chemo for cancer?More than 40yrs i guess. It has gotten worse.A friend of mine told me to check out cannabis cancer on Google and i could not believe how much they are getting done with this stuff that people smoke to get high.It stops the growth of cancer and in some case's it cures it.Arthritis can be put at bay for over a year with the use of cannabis tea mixed with hemp seed oil.If someone don't tell you about other possibilty's you will never know that anything else exist.Something so simple as this is here and not even used. This could and should have already opened up new avenues for doctors.Could this be the real reason behind the federal government wanting to shut down medical marijauna. All i ever here is that the pot heads are causing these place's to be shut down.If this stuff really does all that it says that it does for cancer it would benefit everybody.

Here we go again. Remember when coffee supposedly caused cancer, and they backtracked a couple years after that? There have been so many useless studies that it's no wonder people are leary of the non-profits that raise money for cancer research. I recall a study in the 1980's that concluded shampoo was cancerous to lab rats that drank too much of it. The cost: close to 1/2 a million dollars, which was a government grant to a college.

Wow! We know that sitting disease causes cardiovascular disease, at an alarming rate, and now we know that sitting disease is a major contributor to cancer. I'm lucky enough to work for a manufacturer of sit-stand workstations (Ergotron) and in 2009 we started The Wellness Uprising @ www.juststand.org. We've been informing people of how to combat sitting disease, and sharing research and tips for adding more movement to their everyday life. It's my hope that more people get the message, and the new research will aide in that awareness. Time to JustStand!!!

I don't find this to be surprising. Because it's talking about
an extreme behavior pattern---constantly sitting around!
Over the years, I've noticed that cancer studies constantly
link extreme behaviors with an increased incidence of cancer!
Consume too much fat, get cancer!
Get too much sun, get cancer!
And so forth...
Moral of the story...live a moderate, temperate lifestyle
and reduce your chances of getting cancer!
