Listen: Voicemails left Manti Te'o by fake girlfriend

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o has broken his silence on the girlfriend hoax, claiming he was the victim. But as Dean Reynolds reports, his explanation and the university's investigation are only raising more questions.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o has broken his silence on the girlfriend hoax, claiming he was the victim. But as Dean Reynolds reports, his explanation and the university's investigation are only raising more questions.

Katie Couric played several voicemail recordings left by someone pretending to be Manti Te'o's girlfriend during the Notre Dame linebaker's first television interview about the hoax.

Te'o told Couric on her talk show, "Katie," Thursday that he spent hours on the phone with someone he believed was a Stanford alum who was in a relationship with him. An investigation by the sports blog Deadspin found that no such woman existed, and a 23-year-old named Diane O'Meara has since come forward saying her Facebook pictures and identity was stolen to be a "face" of a fake Twitter account.

A lawyer for Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man linked to the hoax, told the New York Daily News his client was the voice of the woman at the other end of the line in Te'o's many phone conversations. The college football star "thought it was a female he was talking with" and "it was Ronaiah as Lennay," lawyer Milton Grimes reportedly said.

The recordings show a very convincing female voice. "It didn't sound like a man. It sounded like a woman. It's incredible that he can make that noise," Te'o told Couric.

Below is a voicemail of what she said during her first day of chemo treatment. Te'o said he had genuinely believed Kekua had gotten into a serious car accident and then discovered she had leukemia while in the hospital.

This is another voicemail she left accusing Te'o have having another woman in the room. Te'o said on "Katie" he was confused by this voicemail because he couldn't recall an instance when a woman answered his phone for him.

My understanding is that 2 Washington Redskin players also got caught up in a similar internet scam that lasted for one month. If CBS wanted to be fair, why not determine through investigative reporting and reveal their names to the public, and make insinuation about them as you have against Manti Te'O. Or as expected CBS picks the stories it wants to cover to its own benefit.

If CBS had spent as much time investigating the truth about Benghazi when it first occurred many months ago as they have on this story, and not worried what damage Benghazi might have inflicted on Obama, makes me never want to watch CBS news. Katy Curic has a vindictiveness to many of her stories and believe it shows through in this story. Ok Te'O is naive, but my understanding from people who personally know him from Notre Dame, believe he is a very friendly man who IS concerned about the well-being of others and is a genuine person who got caught up in this scam. Remember, the same person who instigated this scam also did the same thing to someone else. Show me your proof to all those that are accusing Te'O of being gay. You bloggers who are making this claim are the same ones who read about individuals on Facebook who committed suicide after others badgered these people to such an extreme, that life wasn't worth living
Therefore, I implore CBS and other news outlets to clear the air on this and NOT allow any story or blog to make the insinuation or allow it to be posted that Te'O is gay, until you have absolute truth about its validity. if I were Te'O's attorney if he has one, I would hold CBS and its affiliates totally responsible for any defamation that may have occurred. CBS allows this mockery, but then runs a story about how gays are treated poorly. get your facts straight.
A note to katy Curik--would like to have you do a complete investigative story on Benghazi which is far more important than Te'O.

This entire story is just stupid. The fact that they keep reporting on it, really says allot about our media and how lame they are. If they spent as much time on the important things, we might actually know what really goes on in this country. Note: I'm only here to post this, so that CBS can see my displeasure of their bullsh!t reporting. If I wanted news like this I'd read The National Inquirer or People Magazine!
