(AP) STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Paternoville will now be Nittanyville.
The Penn State student group that manages the area outside Beaver Stadium where students camp out for prime football tickets has changed the name of the tent city that spouts up the week before home games in Happy Valley.
The also-renamed Nittanyville Coordination Committee said Monday that student officers decided the name change would "return the focus to the overall team and the thousands of students who support it."
Late coach Joe Paterno was fired in November soon after his former assistant, Jerry Sandusky, was charged with child sexual abuse. Sandusky awaits sentencing after being convicted last month of abusing 10 boys. He has maintained his innocence.
NY man faces trial in "Paternoville" sign theftAn independent investigation led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh released a report last week that concluded Paterno and other top Penn State administrators concealed Sandusky's abuse to shield the university from bad publicity.
On its website, the student organization that runs makeshift campgrounds said that "since it was unlikely another coach would stay as long as Coach Paterno had, changing the name for each new coach would be impractical."
"Now, it's a new era of Nittany Lion football," committee President Troy Weller said in a statement released Monday. "And by changing the name to Nittanyville we want to return the focus to the overall team and the thousands of students who support it. We thank the Paterno family for their gracious assistance and support over the last several years."
Students at this year's encampment plan to donate some fundraising proceeds to a child abuse prevention and treatment center.
The tent city was dubbed Paternoville in 2005, and the student organizing group became an official university organization, recognized by the office of student affairs, the following year.

Oh_Come_on_Already [really]
"Paterno did nothing wrong."
Paterno only engaged in the cover-up and protecting Sandusky, and failed to follow up. Actually, my latter point is moot; of course he didn't follow up with appropriate law enforcement because he was neck deep in helping orchestrate the cover-up. Other than covering up and protecting a pedophile, I suppose you're right.
***********************************
You are an idiot! You and other "Jock Haters" only feel good about yourselves when you are tearing someone else down. So I guess you must have been one of the kids who was always picked LAST at sports?(No I am NOT a "jock" and totally hated Phys Ed all during my school years.) Still, nobody knows that Joe did anything to cover anything up. So he had a "conversation" with the administration? Jeeze, they probably already had discussed amongst themselves how to save the school's reputation and had to explain to Joe their reasoning. It WASN'T Joe's call to make. The "Godfathers" of that college just threw him under the bus to save themselves and their own reputations.
I feel sorry for Joe Paterno and his family. Obviously you know NOTHING about how things were in those days. Back in that day and time there were LOTS of claims of sexual harrassment, molestation and whatever both true and false. (Lots of people seeking "revenge" on someone would make a claim that they "knew" or "saw" something.) Some people were actually convicted of such things and did jail time when in fact they never did anything at all. (Next step, law suit) My employer at the time sent all of us employees to a seminar on the subject and we were INSTRUCTED to report any and all of these cases to our Human Resources or Corporate Administration. That's what we were SUPPOSED to do. Especially if you did not WITNESS the situation yourself. (lots of law suits were flying around back then) McQueary on the other hand professes to have WITNESSED something. HE could have done something. He SHOULD have done something. He wasn't in fear of losing his job. He was a lousey little "assistant" coach who wasn't even very good at that and was going nowhere and he knew it. Joe had said himself that he did not feel qualified to deal with the situation and was not familiar enough with the proper procedures, so he turned it over to people he TRUSTED to have it INVESTIGATED and see that justice was done. THEY are the ones who did NOTHING.
None of you mutton heads know any of the facts. And it WASN'T PATERNO WHO WAS THE MOLESTOR!!! HELLOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
No, you people are wrong and are talking from complete and total ignorance.
Why? Because Jo is an easy target, he cannot speak now. All he did as dedicate his life to this school and the tens of thousands of kids he HELPED. Joe did not abuse these children nor did he enable Jerry to continue molesting.
I'm so freakin' tired of these one-sentence nasty comments about Joe and PSU. Leave it alone already!
Continue picking at a scab and it will never heal. Let it go so that PSU and the State College community can move on.
Maybe everyone needs to get off the witch hunt. Paterno did nothing wrong.
Go after the one who actually molesting. DUH!
Can only tell that no one really has the info on this at all.
Penn State would be another small town university that people rarely hear of if it were not for Paterno. give the guy a break.
Oh and BTW, I was molested as a child, so shut the F up!

Then, let's not overlook the fact that Paterno, having gotten wind of the potential explosiveness of this case, figured he better cut the best deal he could with his own enablers on the PSU board of trustees, and hammered out a deal giving him over $5 million in a payout.
Paterno was part and parcel of the whole stinking cesspool. He knew about Sandusky over 10 years ago and that's when he made the decisioon that Sandusky would not succeed him. "Go back to your Second Mile, Jerry, and continue your molestations there." That's what Joe Paterno effectively said to Sandusky.
Joe Paterno is rotten to the core.
What the hell does your last statement mean? One, I don't believe you were molested. Two, if you had been, you would not be so cavalier in dismissing a pedophile enabler. Three, what's with the "shut the F up."?
One last point, if you missed it - Joe Paterno is rotten to the core.
