McConnell email: Obama is "coming for your guns"

In an email to potential donors, the re-election campaign for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., charged that President Obama and Senate Democrats are "coming for your guns," according to WFPL News in Louisville.

"You and I are literally surrounded," McConnell's campaign manager Jesse Benton reportedly wrote in the January 20 email. "The gun-grabbers in the Senate are about to launch an all-out-assault on the Second Amendment. On your rights. On your freedom."

Mr. Obama last week laid out a sweeping plan for reducing gun violence, which includes implementing universal background checks for gun sales, the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban, capping ammunition magazines, increasing punishments for gun trafficking, and improving insurance coverage for mental health.

As he explained his plan, the president stressed that he intends to respect the rights afforded by the Second Amendment. "I respect our strong tradition of gun ownership and the rights of hunters and sportsmen," he said.

McConnell's campaign, however, characterized Mr. Obama's plan as a "thinly-veiled" scheme to undermine gun rights.

The email follows a robocall that the senator recorded and sent to voters over the weekend, in which he promised to keep "fighting tooth and nail, to protect your Second Amendment rights."

McConnell, who took office in 1985 and is Kentucky's longest-serving senator ever, is up for re-election in 2014.

Republicans last week were, for the most part, resistant to the president's plans, although there is some bipartisan support for certain proposals, such as universal background checks.

In a private meeting Saturday with top Democratic donors, former President Bill Clinton reportedly warned Mr. Obama's supporters that they shouldn't underestimate the conservative passion for gun rights.

"Do not patronize the passionate supporters of your opponents by looking down your nose at them," Clinton said. "A lot of these people live in a world very different from the world lived in by the people proposing these things. I know because I come from this world."

The tragedy is that McConnel is now a paid employee of the NRA. His private opinions might differ from the NRA party line but he is now so much indebted to the NRA, his alligence is to them and not the American people.

Let me repeat what we all already know:

1. The Clinton Ban had measurable non-impact on assault weapons being used in mass killing events with 15 events during the 10 year ban. There were 16 events in the 10 years preceding the Clinton Ban, and there have been 14 in the 9 years since.

2. Plugs can be made to be inserted in larger magazines just as with pump shotguns. Why introduce new magazines? There are already a billion magazines out there. After all, all laws are to help decent law abiding people. Simply suggest to gun owners they need not load all the way up.

Please urge your politicians to outlaw hammers. We really need "Hammer-Control" According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle. In 2011, there was 323 murders committed with a rifle but 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs. I don't care about your right to own a hammer. I want them outlawed now.

OMG .. also we need "fist-control" ... Another interesting fact: According to the FBI, nearly twice as many people are killed by hands and fists each year than are killed by murderers who use rifles.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid must past filibuster reform with a talking filibuster being the minimum. Republicans cannot be allowed to nullify elections with their continued obstruction of the people's will by stopping the majority from debating and passing legislation.

Nothing like stirring things up. McConnell is just a troublemaker that the people in Kentucky are foolish enough to re-elect over and over again.

Most burglars are not interested in confrontation. Besides, they will know that once the dog has set up a commotion, the police will have been called. So they will flee. Moreover, most burglars do not carry guns. Too much of an invitation to be arrested. If they feel the need to be armed, they pick up a knife in the kitchen and wrap the handle in a towel.
