Poll: Majority of Americans view the NRA favorably

The president said he supports a ban on assault weapons. Getting it though Congress quickly, however, is unlikely, and the mere mention of the ban is enough to send people running to the stores to buy guns before they become illegal. Chip Reid reports.

The president said he supports a ban on assault weapons. Getting it though Congress quickly, however, is unlikely, and the mere mention of the ban is enough to send people running to the stores to buy guns before they become illegal. Chip Reid reports.

A new poll conducted after the mass shooting that killed 20 children and seven adults in Newtown, Conn., found that a majority of Americans have a favorable view of the National Rifle Association.

In a Gallup survey of 1,038 randomly selected adults, 54 percent said they have a "very favorable" or "mostly favorable" opinion of the powerful gun lobby. The NRA's support is down from its peak in 2005 - the last time Gallup asked the question - when 60 percent of respondents said they had positive views of the organization. The NRA's low point among public perception occurred in 1995 when only 42 percent of respondents said they viewed the organization favorably.

The NRA has become the target among critics of gun ownership with its absolutist views on guns, including assault weapons. A week after the Newtown massacre, Wayne LaPierre, the CEO of the NRA, held a news conference where he proposed a solution to school shootings, calling for "armed police officers in every single school in this nation." LaPierre's highly-publicized remarks happened at the midpoint of the poll, which was conducted from December 19-22.

Not surprisingly, respondents who keep guns in their homes had a more favorable view of the NRA than respondents who do not own guns. Seventy-five percent of gun owners view the organization in a positive light compared to 40 percent non-gun owners who do.

Also unsurprisingly, 83 percent of Republicans, who tend to prefer less gun control, backed the NRA while only 36 percent of Democrats had a favorable view. The poll has a +/- 4 percent margin of error.

Hmmmmm, after all your blathering about us doing the "fracking", it's kinda looking like you are doing your own "fracking". And it sounds like you might be going to do a lot more of it!

Me neither, nor do I support the mentally-ill having firearms, but then again, it's the inmates running the asylum, and they would never admit to being mentally-ill in the least, no matter how bad their PTSD actually is!

Public Policy Polling, the firm that correctly predicted all 50 states in the presidential election, is known for asking some weird, quirky and, sometimes, controversial questions in its polls.

In May, after Mitt Romney's much-publicized statement during the Republican primary that the "trees are the right height" in Michigan, PPP asked the state's residents:

Q8 In Michigan, do you think the trees are the right height, or not?

The trees are the right height........38%
They are not.............................8%
Not sure.................................55%

How can any American have a "favorable" opinion of any D.C. LOBBYIST group?

ALL these scuumbaggs should be tarred and feathered and run out of D.C.

No way this poll is accurate. Gallup better go back and re-review their methods and their target audience. They are likely using targeting methods employed for elections. This isn't call 10 people in this state, call 10 people this state. This is a view of large metropolitan regions versus everyone else in the country. This poll on the surface is saying that the 54% of the people or maybe slightly less living in or near a large metropolitan area are pro NRA. There is no way that I believe that statistic based upon my experience in my location, and having lived in the Northeast and South.

If the poll doesn't say what you want it to, it has to be wrong doesn't it? In your personal experience you probably hang out with people who think like you so maybe your views are the slanted ones.

The US is full of "former" Canadian citizens who had enough of the great Canadian healthcare system.

Now that's just bullcrap. The only ones going to the U.S. are the RICH. They think they are better than everyone else. They don't want to have to wait a few days to see a specialist. No one in their right mind would give up their health care, here.

There was a case of parents not wanting to take their child off life support and they went to one of your hospitals for a particular procedure to keep the child alive longer. It was for their benefit, not the child's. For some reason they wanted their child to suffer longer. And of course your hospital was only too glad to help them. It was MAJOR BUCKS for them!

" Everything was free...".

See, this is how I know you are lying because our health care has never been free.

"...and the citizens of Canada wait time is impossiable to see a Doctor."

That's just not so. I can see my doctor tomorrow. If not mine, I can go to one of the many clinics and see one without an appointment. As for specialists, we can see one in about 2 weeks. Sooner if it's an emergency. The longest wait that I know of for a specialist was a month. Surgery, 4 months. And that was because it was for something RARE. There was only one doctor that could do the surgery.

"Also most other services like Dental care , eye care and other sub health care items still cost the citizen themself."

Wrong again. I don't pay for dental care or eye care. Eye care is covered under my medical and I have a dental care plan.

In Canada, everyone, including the rich, gets the same health care. The BEST health care. You guys think because you are paying thousands of dollars more that your health care is better. Not so. You are being ripped of by your insurance companies.
