Sen. Michael Crapo arrested on DUI in Virginia

Updated Dec. 24, 1:10 p.m. ET

Sen. Michael Crapo, R.-Idaho, was arrested in Virginia early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence, Alexandria, Va., police say.

Police spokesman Craig T. Fifer said an officer was on routine patrol when he saw Crapo's vehicle run a red light. It was stopped at Hume Avenue and Mount Vernon at 12:45 a.m. and he was alone at the time.

Crapo then underwent several field sobriety tests, which he failed, Fifer said in a statement. He was then taken into custody without incident. According to the Alexandria police, his blood alcohol level was 0.11; 0.08 is the legal limit in Virginia.

Police took Crapo to the Alexandria jail and he was released on $1,000 bond at about 5 a.m., Crapo's office said. He has a January 4 court date.

"I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance," Crapo said Sunday night. "I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated."

Crapo, a Mormon who has been a bishop in the church for decades, has said before in interviews that he doesn't drink alcohol, consistent with his church's doctrine.

That's .3 over the newest limits. .12 USED to be the limit so I bet you wouldn't consider him drunk just talking to him. But, as they say, the law is the law.

Simple, Sen. Michael Crapo if found guilty should resign from his office and be given time in the county hotel. That's it folks!Has nothing to do with GOP or Dem or anything else. Saying "Sorry" doesn't cut it!

That's YOUR opinion! There are many of us who disagree!

If he should resign then so should every other politician who's done the same thing and worse! I think that would pretty much cover all of them, every politician in the local, state, and federal level! Soon we'd have no politicians at all, Republican or Democrat!

Typical diversion by JV since she is unable to criticize any republican, especially crapo who not only LIED about his drinking due to his cultist religion, but is a total hypocrite for putting other people's lives in danger by drinking and driving, and then running a red light.

Hey JV -- completely understand this is not about anyone except crapo!

Actually, it's only about DESPICABLE crapo, the hypocritical cultist!

JV is just defending one of "her own". Breaking the LAW is breaking the law NO MATTER if "everyone" does it. This man is 61 years old and a US senator, not some irresponsible teenager that hasn't matured enough to consider the consequences of this behavior.

Are you really so dense to insinuate all republicans are the same because of one mans actions?
JV1970 replies:

He's as dense as a rock if he thinks alchoholism, adultery, and all of the other sins that the Republican party's committed recently don't happen in all other political parties, INCLUDING THE DEMOCRATS!

We could bring up Ted Kennedy. He saved his own life but not the life of his young female passenger that drowned. He paid legal or political consequences. In all fairness I do believe it haunted him his entire life.

Typical republican troll, deflecting and disrupting a thread completely about the hypocritical mormon cultist -- krapo -- and his need to try to hide his drinking problem from both his constituents and cultist church. He lost, and should just resign in total embarrassment for being such a phony and threatening innocent lives by running a red light.

I've said (as another example of the endless number of times I've spoken into the wind over the years) - nearly since the beginning of the internet - that America would be far better off if we broke up the center pestilence that is Washington, D.C. up and sent our Representatives and Senators home where their constituents could watch them; they could do their voting and conferencing over the internet.

The goal wouldn't be to watch them, per se...but to give their constituents the opportunity to intercept and hang the lawyers, lobbyists, and HNWIs (high net worth individuals) who set out to intentionally corrupt them - usually and unfortunately with great success.

It's bad enough that crapo is an outright LIAR, but he also showed how completely irresponsible he is by drinking and driving and then running a red light that could have killed someone! This guy is despicable!

Think4times This crime is one that probably at least 1/4 of all Americans have committed at least once. Unless you've lived a very sheltered and angelic life and have never committed this crime, you shouldn't criticize those who have.

At least this man admitted his error and is taking responsibility.
As a Mormon and a bishop to boot he can be sanctioned by the church as the use of liquor is a no no.
But come on wouldn;t you drink if you were in DC? Its either you do dope or become a drunk. Just look at many of the democrats and republicans.
But again at least he is taking responsibility and not blaming others as obama continues to do!

LOL! For crissakes, this mormon cultist hasn't taken responsibility for anything yet....he got caught driving drunk instead of taking a cab, and hasn't even gone to court yet!

Nice sidetrack though, with your ODS coming through loud and clear!
