NRA promises "meaningful contributions" to avert another Newtown

Protesters marching with the social activist group CREDO along with other concerned citizens descend on the offices of the NRA's (National Rifle Association) Capitol Hill lobbiest's office demanding the pro-gun lobby stand down in reaction to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School December 17, 2012, in Washington, DC.

In its first comment following the horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the National Rifle Association today said it is "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

The NRA went silent in the wake of the tragedy last Friday: The gun-rights group's Facebook page disappeared, it stopped sending out tweets, and it told reporters that "[u]ntil the facts are thoroughly known, NRA will not have any comment."

On Tuesday, the group said it would hold a "major news conference" on Friday, December 21 in the Washington D.C., area to further explain its position. It did not offer additional details on the press conference.

In addition to promising "meaningful contributions" to avert another tragedy, the NRA said in its short statement that its members were heartbroken by the shooting.

"The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters - and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown," the statement reads. "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting."

Ban insane people!! No, really, the media is complicit in these killing. They're guilty for displaying so many acts of violence in SO MANY ways, in both news and programing. They plant the seeds f violence in those sick minds and the benefit from covering their acts. The politicians LOVE the FREE access they get from the media. So, you have to ask if the media and politicos really care??

Many years ago as a Marine recruit at Parris Island, I had an epiphany of sorts when I was on a live firing range where at a couple of firing points you had to hand off your M-1 to an instructor and fire a BAR (hey...I SAID it was a long time ago)

Before I could fire the Browning, the order came to stand easy on the line...then shortly thereafter, to clear and lock all weapons (possible troops in the impact zone)

I cleared the BAR and the instructor (an old style E-6 Gunnery Sgt) was SUPPOSED to clear and lock my M-1 before returning it to me...

He took the clip out, but left an armor-piercing steel jacketed ball round in the chamber...but being such a boot, I checked it and probably kept him from ever becoming an E-7 Gunny (the range officer was next to him when I popped the round out of a weapon that he was supposed to know how to clear and lock.

From that day to this, I have proceeded on the assumption that I am the ONLY individual on the planet who can be completely trusted with firearms...and that attitude kept me from ever being shot...at least by accident...

But lately I've even begun wondering about myself...which leaves no one!

Guns are designed to kill...guns in the hands of the feloniously stupid kill an awful lot of people and much more indiscriminately...perhaps in a way even more tragically...since the victims might be friends or relatives you weren't particulary mad at

Just collataral damage from "friendly fire"

indvfreedomliberal replies: I got your point you missed mine in that good minded people in general do not do irrational things like take shots that would be dangerous to others. Unlike the keystone cop fiction you see on TV.

So how would a teacher in a classroom full of frightened students be any different than this scenario?

So are you saying that a teacher should just abandon his/her students and play "vigilante" on the off chance that he/she might be able to "take down" a killer armed with an assault rifle in SOME OTHER room full of frightened children?

Since the NRA is OK with the 35 Americans that get killed EVERY DAY on average by a gun in the US, I would be surprised if they will change their tune now. I hope I am wrong.

It's somewhat disturbing reading many of the comments here. There is so much hatred toward guns and gun owners. Shouldn't the rage and hatred be toward the evil coward who committed these murders. To take the lives of such beautiful children is unthinkable. Let alone to think that he murdered his own mother. Who can comprehend why this would happen? Do you really think the NRA or their members would in anyway want or cause this to happen? I admire the NRA for not commenting soon after this happened as opposed to the anti-gun crowd who immediately started using this tragedy for their political capital. I never want to see anyone let alone children murdered. It makes no difference what weapon is used. What has happened to the value and respect for human life. It's tragic and we need to learn why someone could be so evil. This evil coward took his mother's car and used it to drive it to the school but on one is saying there needs to be a ban on black four door cars. This was an unspeakably evil cowardly act perpetrated by a disturbed evil individual. Let's try to have some intelligent civil discussions and stop the name calling and insinuation of foul language. If you can't maybe it's better you live by the rule "It's better to be silent and thought a fool then to speak up and remove all doubt"

Thus far...the only "meaningful contribution" stemming from the Newtown massacre has been a huge upsurge in weapon sales to panicky gun nuts who are terrified of "missing out"...

They can make the world a much safer place by hiding in the basement and never, ever coming out!

When the 2nd amendment was adopted in 1791, people rode in oxcarts and used muskets. An experienced soldier at that time could reload one to three times per minute depending on the make and model of his rifle or musket. Not much room for driveby shootings.

Of course you could use a horse, (rideby shooting?), but good luck reloading a musket on the back of a galloping horse.

for all of you wanting our gun rights taken away i have to say i would love to lock all of you up in your own room and put a gun on the floor in front of you and see if it ever goes off what do you think would it go off

now then tell me what is the problem

answer this if this individual was at the school and they heard the break in and they just happened to have a gun on them and before you knew it lanza was down on the floor well what would be the headline then and the reactions would the person be charged probably yes but maybe not convicted in court but now this person has a record even though he saved peoples lives

so tell me what is wrong with this world today please

Your first attempt at constructing lucid sentences, comonsense1?

You need a LOT of work

You also need to be kept away from firearms, sharp objects, matches etc...

This has little to do with guns... this is so misplaced. Let's take cars off roads since they kill more people. ... box cutters caused 9-11. This is about mental health and the degradation of our culture. Remember the Fort Hood shootings... this was on an Army base.. the guy was unstable and irrational. You will not remove all the guns, even if you ban ARs. btw... notice how the US news did not report on the incident in China on the same day.. a guy took a machete to 22 kids ... no guns... yet, mentally ill people still find weapons to kill/injure large numbers.
