Little change in "fiscal cliff" talks - or talking points

A day after House Speaker John Boehner said the White House "wasted another week" in the negotiations over the "fiscal cliff", both President Obama and the Republican Party, are repeating their arguments today over one major sticking point: taxes.

Obama: Tax hike on wealthy only "fiscal cliff" deal I'll sign

In his weekly address, Mr. Obama said there is still some wiggle room on what Democrats are willing to give in negotiations over how to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff" at year's end. But increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans, he stressed, is "one principle I won't compromise on."

Under the White House's proposal to generate revenue by allowing the Bush-era tax cuts to expire January 1 for the top two percent of earners in America, "everyone would enjoy some peace of mind," the president argued. He pointed out that "even the wealthiest Americans would get a tax cut on the first $250,000 of their income."

Currently, progress on a deal is stalled due to the split Congress's disagreement over whether to extend the cuts for all Americans or only those making less than $250,000 a year. Republicans have criticized the president's "unserious" plan for not cutting spending deeply enough; Mr. Obama returned the favor in his remarks, calling the GOP's proposal "an unbalanced plan that actually lowers rates for the wealthiest Americans.

"If we want to protect the middle class," he continued, "then the math just doesn't work."

On Friday, Vice President Joe Biden suggested the tax rate to be imposed on the wealthiest Americans is "theoretically" negotiable from the 39.6 level it was during Bill Clinton's presidency. The president made no mention of the tax rate, which he and Democratic leaders in Congress have been pushing, but mentioned other areas where he's willing to walk toward the middle.

"We can and should do more than just extend middle class tax cuts," Mr. Obama said. "I stand ready to work with Republicans on a plan that spurs economic growth, creates jobs and reduces our deficit - a plan that gives both sides some of what they want. I'm willing to find ways to bring down the cost of health care without hurting seniors and other Americans who depend on it. And I'm willing to make more entitlement spending cuts on top of the $1 trillion dollars in cuts I signed into law last year."

Last month's election results, the president reasoned, showed that "a clear majority of Americans - Democrats, Republicans, and independents - agreed with a balanced approach that asks something from everyone, but a little more from those who can most afford it. It's the only way to put our economy on a sustainable path without asking even more from the middle class. And it's the only kind of plan I'm willing to sign."

Rubio: Tax hikes not the answer to "fiscal cliff"

Delivering the Republican response, though, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. - a hero of the hands-off government tea party movement - tried to make the GOP's case that tax hikes, even on the wealthiest Americans, are not the answer to reining in the deficit.

"Our goal should be to generate new revenue by creating new taxpayers, not new taxes," he said, arguing that closing loopholes in the tax code would free up revenue.

"Tax increases will not solve our $16 trillion debt; only economic growth and a reform of entitlement programs will help control the debt." But the middle class that is so vital to growing the economy, Rubio lamented, is struggling to find and keep jobs because a "growing opportunity gap has developed between the dreams of millions of Americans and the opportunities for them to actually realize them."

Describing his defense as "personal" because of his parents' journey from poor immigrants to the middle class, Rubio concluded: "The emergence of a strong, 21st century American middle class is the answer to our most pressing challenges."

You have no argument I see. You just regurgitated back what I said to be the case and somehow want to imply it's not. Material wealth and the means of production of material wealth results in more taxes and user fee's for the people using, not for some rich boyz wanting a free ride, certainly not for the workers who must sell their labor for less than it's worth. So it is fair then, for people with the majority of the material wealth to pay the lion's share of the taxes and user fee's. If you can't come to grips with that take two aspirin and call Rush in the morning. I'm sure he can tell you some lie that will soothe your fevered brow.

YEAH!!!! The majority of the people using these resources are businesses, and they are the ones paying. We do pay the lions share little boy. I don't listen to Rush.

Maybe you're in the wrong country, perhaps you should investigate immigrating to North Korea or Cuba.

That's all I'm saying, those who use the most should pay the most. That's just, equitable, fair. But I think you want to weasel out of paying your fair share you Aynroid loon. My opinion of you Libertarians is you're lying, cheating, weaseling little scum-sucking pigs that want the rest of us to participate in your "tax free me" con game. You're a lucky *****, I'd tax you pukes at the 92% post WWII rate if I had the stroke. Course we won't get that anytime soon, too many bought and paid for RepubliCON congress-critters.

What??? You don't listen to Rush? Who'd a thunk it, blubber head?

Going over the cliff is actually a slide down a steep hill; it's not like lemmings jumping off of the edge of a real cliff.

No deal will get done in time to avoid sliding down the hill. Congressmen are going to leave DC by the 21st - 10 business days from now. These elected officials can hardly tie their shoes in 10 days, and Boehner has a mutiny on his hands from the dim-wit TP backed Representatives.

Maybe, just maybe, when the legislators get back in January, they can actually start to get some real work done - but only if the GOP stops being in denial about keeping low tax rates for the super-rich. It's not going to happen; the president learned a lesson in his debates with Mr. Romney, which is that intelligent confrontation produces results. Republicans aren't going to get away with holding the debt ceiling hostage to their demands for machete slashes in entitlement spending; the sitting president has put them on notice that tactic isn't going to work this time around. It's going to become CRYSTAL CLEAR exactly who is creating gridlock and preventing a solution to the country''s slow rate of economic growth.

If the GOP doesn't disavow the Tea Party and Grover Norquist, it will become a "Rump Party" before the end of 2013.

Why doesn't Obama back down on his insistence that U.S. taxpayers have to provide illegal invaders with every entitlement program under the sun? Just because he owes a big favor to the Mexican gov't for organizing its citizens in the U.S. to vote for him?

If you have more property than Joe, then it takes more people to protect it. If you sell things, you have more people cheat you on contracts so you use the courts more. If you ship product you use the government subsidized rail, highway and harbor system. If you employ workers, they were most likely educated at public expense; expense that you as a TAKER benefit from inordinately. It's plain for anybody but a twisted clown like yourself to see, you're trying to short-change the rest of society to your own profit. The bill's coming due, and you rich-boyz are going to pay it.

----------------------------------------------------------

Your argument is hollow. If one has more property, sells products, uses rail, highways, ports and the courts more it results in more tax revenue and user fees. Ever heard of fuel taxes, port taxes, sales taxes and court costs. Many who pay taxes for schools either have no children in school or send their kids to private schools.

So in short...You're welcome.

Look, take your Libertarian-Aynroid crap and shove it up your a--! Get your figures from Cato? As far as I'm concerned, Libertarians don't have a dog in the fight nor a seat at the table. You can take your maker vs taker argument and put it where the sun doesn't shine, 51% of the US rejects it. You WORK MORE OR WORK SMARTER, the real MAKERS (Labor) isn't going to put up with TAKERS (Management and Ownership) taking most of the pie and crapping on the rest.

Great, go start your own business and compete, that's what capitalism is all about.

Come on ignorant Republi-minion, lets see you prove the "junk" that you post, otherwise you're just that...an ignorant Republi-minion as usual posting numbers and dollar figures that you 'saw' on Fox News, or on one of your other "fruit cake" right-wing websites, and believed (without having the brains to verify anything that you saw).......typical moron Republi-minion.

Self employment taxes are comprised of two parts: Social Security and Medicare. For 2011, you will pay 4.2 percent and your employer will pay Social Security taxes of 6.2 percent on the first $106,800 of your covered wages. You each also pay Medicare taxes of 1.45 percent on all your wages - no limit.

If you are self-employed, your Social Security tax rate is 10.4 percent and your Medicare tax is 2.9 percent on those same amounts of earnings but you are able to deduct the employer portion.

Beginning January 2013, the additional Medicare tax becomes effective. The law imposes and additional .9 percent tax on wages and self-employment income exceeding $200,000 for single individuals and $250,000 for married individuals filing joint returns.

An example would be a married self employed/business owner who has a profit of 350,000

Self-Employment tax Social Security, adjusted earnings $110,100, Less: self-employment deduction $0, taxable self-employment earnings $110,100, self-employment tax $11,450

Self-Employment tax medicare, adjusted earnings $350,000, Less: self-employment deduction $26,775, taxable self-employment earnings $323,225, self-employment tax $10,274

Total: 21,724

This will be the last time I respond to your hateful postings, you obviously don't want to have a serious conversation. Thank you good bye and good luck

The cliff is the way to develop a plan that will be called a deal , anything before that will not be of a developed plan but rather a political deal that both parties will wave victory flags , what the USA needs is a victory of economic successes for both now and in the future , and not some party wish list .

Fiscal responsibility will not be rejected by the majority of Americans , and yes this starts with spending cuts and tax relief loop holes for the 1% to stop. The Europe way of printing without cuts as crashed on the doors of Europe now that the past has caught up to them.

If Europe was to do it over they would have cut the spending and thew a hammer into the printing presses of failure . You cannot spend more than you bring in , simple economics , thats why many of us are under the weight of our foolish spending of the past.

From the net:

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker said on Fox television Sunday that he speaks for many Republicans who realize that Obama holds the stronger hand on increasing taxes on the wealthy in the ongoing debate about how to avoid sending the U.S. economy over the so-called "fiscal cliff," big tax increases and cuts in government spending that will kick in automatically at the start of the year.
