Pelosi doubles down: "If there's no agreement, we go over the cliff"

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi doubled down today on a White House pledge to go over the so-called "fiscal cliff" in the absence of a deal that includes tax hikes for the wealthy, telling reporters that "If there's no agreement, we go over the cliff."

Yesterday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the White House is "absolutely" prepared to go over "cliff" should negotiations fail to yield a deal ends Bush-era cuts for household incomes above $250,000 per year.

"There is no prospect [for] an agreement that doesn't involve rates going up on the top two percent of the wealthiest Americans," Geithner told CNBC. "What we need to see is have them acknowledge that they are prepared to see rates go up. And if they are willing to accept that, and commit to that as part of an agreement, then we think we can do something really good for the American economy."

Pelosi: "If there's no agreement, we go over the cliff"

Asked about the statement in a press conference today, Pelosi said she saw Geithner's comment not as a threat but as a "statement of fact."

"I saw it as a statement of fact. It's not a threat, it's a prediction," Pelosi said. "If there is no agreement, then the fiscal cliff has to be dealt with... Let's hope that we can have an agreement."

  • On "fiscal cliff" deal, House GOP appears poised to back Boehner
  • Nett Geithner: "Absolutely" ready to go over "cliff"
  • Democrats and Republicans remain locked in a stalemate over finding a formula for averting the so-called "cliff," a series of tax hikes and spending cuts set to go into effect next year. The president insists he will not sign off on a proposal that does not increase tax rates for households earning $250,000 or more per year, while Republicans have repeatedly reiterated their refusal to raise tax rates. In recent days, the White House and House Speaker John Boehner each offered up plans reflective of their party's ideologies, both of which were swiftly rejected by the other side.

Pelosi blasted the GOP proposal, which includes $800 billion worth of unspecified revenue increases and $900 billion worth of spending cuts, as "an assault on the middle class, on our seniors, and on our future" and said "it was not in furtherance of finding common ground."

"There's no reason why we couldn't come to the table and get this done right now. Everybody knows what the elements are and so the question is, if we're going to do, it let's do it now," she said. "If we're not going to do it, if the Republicans are just going to- to say, 'never, no way, we will not ouch one hair on the head of the wealthiest people in our country, not one red cent,' ... then let us know that right now too so we can take the consequences of that and mitigate for that."

President Obama is slated to visit a middle-class family in Northern Virginia to put a human face on the implications of going over the cliff. Democrats are pushing to extend the Bush-era rates for most Americans, while allowing them to go back to Clinton-era rates for the top two percent of earners.

"The beauty of the 39.6 - the Clinton tax rates - was the following: it produces the revenue we need to have a fair and balanced solution that also helps reduce the deficit," Pelosi told reporters. "It stops the hostage taking of the middle income tax cut."

The Democratic leader also castigated House Republicans for leaving town during the negotiations, which on the GOP side are being led by House Speaker John Boehner.

"We most certainly should be here," she said.

Pelosi strategy has always ended in total failure. As House speaker she paved the way for economic recession and huge unemployment. Pelosi hasn't forgotten that Hillary voted for intervention in Iraq. Pelosi's treacherous character was exposed when she took the wicked step of going to Damascus at the time of Iraqi crisis to shake the bloody hands of Assad.

To be honest, I am a republican, and I do not understand why the republicans will not agree to an increased tax on the 2%, it is actually just losing the benefit they have enjoyed, they knew it was not meant to last forever when implemented.
That said, I do not agree with everything the democrats want either, but that is as it should be. There should be compromise, they should move "forward", and stop passing blame , and acting like small children. We did not elect them to act like this while representing our best interests.

We should also realize this cut is only a drop in the bucket. I believe it has been estimated to solve the problem for 8 days, then what? There must be many cuts, much less spending, and many, many concessions made on both sides, if anything is to be accomplished!

As far as I can tell the Democrats are offering NOTHING in return for these tax hikes. Reagan got caught by the "Raise taxes now and we will do spending cuts later." If you are old enough to remember, the spending cuts never were addressed.

It's foolish to waste time posturing, which the Repubs are doing whether they want to admit it or not. The issue is when is the Republican Party going to throw off the rope of Grover Norquist and act for the good of this country. We DO need to reduce spending..,some of our National debt is wasted on atrocious things... but the top 2% also DO need to pay their fair share, which they haven't since Bush cut their taxes unnecessarily. Since when do we allow a man who has never been elected to a public office run our country? The Repubs need to repudiate that foolish pledge and get to work on a reasonable compromise.

Why is it that all we are talking about here is the tax rate for the wealthy? The media and liberals have successfully turned the fiscal cliff negotiations into this single point. It's about spending, stupid!!! Conservatives on this comment board need to stay on point about that. We MUST reduce spending... the tax rates are irrelevant... raise them for the wealthy, I don't care but REDUCE the spending 10 times as much. Repubs and dems need to man up on the real issue here and address it.

Considering that Barry added more to the debt than Bush did, how can it be Bush's fault?

This is for "THE_BAD_RANGER_IS_BACK", please take your "meds" and back away from your mothers computer. The top tax rate in 1945 was 94%. The rate was cut to 91% by 1948, and the threshold for paying that rate went up from about $200,000 to more than 1.8 million in current dollars, this is according to the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan Washington research group. When Republicans asked GOP President Dwight D. Eisenhower to lower taxes he stated ... "We cannot afford to reduce taxes and reduce income until we have in sight a program of expenditure that shows that the factors of income and outgo will be balanced."

Ronald Reagan arrived at the White House in 1981 touting three major agenda items. Two of these were just like George Bush's 20 years later: greatly increase defense spending and slash taxes on the wealthy (remember its called "Voodoo Economics). He did both. His greatest effort was devoted to cutting the top tax rate from 70% to 50% to 38% to 28%, giving obesely wealthy Americans gigantic new piles of money to play with. The national debt nearly tripled on Reagan's watch, from $993 billion to $2.6 trillion. George W. Bush added an extra $4.9 trillion to the national debt while he smirked his way around the Oval Office.

And you seem to forget that Republican President Ronald Reagan raised Taxes 11 times and then signed into law "The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982", THE BIGGEST TAX INCREASE IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES! And this was while he looted the U.S. Treasury to pay for the "Savings & Loan" fiasco during his administration.

So the question is WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU AMERICANS? Can't you do the math? Look around at our infrastructure and understand that the loss of Tax Revenue ( from 94% to 28%) is destroying our country and bringing back the Robber Barons. Wow!
