GM, like Chrysler, refutes Romney's auto industry ad

For the third time in a week, GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and the auto industry are at loggerheads, this time over a Romney radio ad implying that GM and Chrysler are expanding production in China at the cost of American jobs.

The ad claimed that "Under President Obama, GM cut 15,000 American jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars built in China, which means 15,000 more jobs for China."

The accusation drew a dismissive response from a GM spokesman, who explained, "We've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days. No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country."

The ad further claimed that "Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps in, you guessed it, China."

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne refuted Romney's comments in an email sent yesterday to Chrysler employees: "Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China," Marchionne wrote, touting Chrysler's recent production expansions in America.

It was not the first time Romney claimed that Chrysler was shifting production to China, nor was it the first time Chrysler rebuked Romney's charge.

When Romney told an Ohio audience last week that "Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China," Chrysler colorfully waved away the charge.

"It is a leap that would be difficult even for professional circus acrobats," wrote Chrysler spokesman Gualberto Ranieri in a blog post. "Let's set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China."

Chrysler's wry dismissal did not stop Romney from repeating the claim in an ad warning that "Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job."

FactCheck.org called Romney's claims "flat wrong," explaining, "It's misleading to suggest that Chrysler's decision to expand into China will cost U.S. jobs -- especially after the company has said it would have no impact on its U.S. operations."

The fact-checking website cited a report from Bloomberg that Chrysler was mulling "adding Jeep production sites rather than shifting output from North America to China."

Romney's incentive to tarnish the credibility of President Obama's auto bailout is clear - his electoral fortunes largely depend on his showing in midwestern manufacturing states like Ohio and Michigan with a large auto industry presence. If he can convince voters there that the auto bailout did more harm than good, he will stand to benefit.

But that doesn't mean the automakers have to play along.

Let's set the record straight, FactCheck.org and CBS (along with rest of Main Stream Media): In Marchionne's own words on an earnings conference call last week, he proves Romney's ad on Chrysler IS correct. http://nlpc.org/stories/2012/10/30/fiat%E2%80%99s-benchmark-outsource-chrysler-jeep-%E2%80%93-1-savings

Sorry but Romney will give the rich and those following the proper zealot driven religion a good ride.
All others will be in the back of the bus. His repeated lies about Jeep is proof he has no empathy for hard working, middle class people and their families. The tea party and the likes of Santorum and Ryan will work Romney like a puppet on strings.

Obama is just plain flat out lying!!!

There is no dispute that Chrysler/Fiat is in negotiations to build Jeeps in China. Fiat CEO, Marchionne, Giles, Mike Manley and many others at Chrysler admit that. They have even justified why saying; "It is just simple arithmetic China imposes very high tariffs on IMPORTED vehicles so it is only feasible to build locally in order to sell locally. The Chinese won't buy a US made Jeep that would cost twice what a locally (Chinese Jeep) would cost.

Obama claims Romney's ad said Chrysler was going to "move" Jeep jobs to China, while his ad actually said Chrysler was going to "build" Jeeps in China.

Romney's ad states: "Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job."

Romney's ad is accurate. President Obama did take GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy, Chrysler was sold/given to Fiat, and Fiat is considering adding production Jeep jobs in China.

GM already has sent cars to China and this is about Chrysler??? Fiat the majority stock holder and owner of Chrysler says YES it will be making Jeeps in China. Why do you think Iacoca jump the Dem ship and is supporting Romney? He spent a lot of time saving Chrysler the last time just to see it given away. It is no longer an American Company.

FYI Fiat is also due to post it's yearly earnings they are projecting a 19 Billion dollar loss this year. Now it may take a year to get plants up and running in China, but I'll guarantee when they start trimming it won't be in Itally or cheaper China!

The Chinese Jeep plant is for Jeeps being sold IN China, NOT for the rest of us, or don't you seem to care about that "minor" detail?

You have spent so much time following FAUX News with it's "Fair and Balanced" reporting that you fail to even look for any accuracy in what you read and see. As long as it supports your position, accuracy is not something to worry your mind over~~

I get tired of making this comment. Obama says he saved GM and Chrysler, the entire auto industry and 1 million jobs. Well, the facts are, there were 10 companies manufacturing autos at that time. Obama arranged for the union and the government to buy GM, he let Chrysler go to the Italians and ignored the other 8 manufacturers who did not need his welfare. These other 8 could have picked up the slack of GM and Chrysler while they went through the appropriate legal bankruptcy proceedings. And, oh, those 1 million jobs??? In 2007 there were only 800,000 jobs in the US auto industry including suppliers and all 10 auto manufacturers. In 2010, there were 760,000 jobs on the same basis. The million must have included a few foreigners outside of our borders. And for GM's comments above, what in the heck does "We entered some parallel universe------------" mean. GM did not deny Romney's accusations. Their chairman recently bragged that soon 7 of every 10 GM cars will be built in china. And who cares about an Italian jeep built in the USA?

You should care about Jeeps being built in the USA! Oh, and about your bean counting. Those 1 million jobs aren't just auto workers and the suppliers. You've got many spin off businesses that are effected by a large employer such as a Ford, Chrysler and a GM!! I just don't DON'T GET IT!!! At the time our economy was at it's worst because of some greedy bankers and you guys are crying about Obama saving the auto industry!!! If the auto industry had of gone down the economy would definitely would be worst off than it is now! Ooops! I forgot, Obama is a miracle worker!!! He should of been able to unravel all of the problems from the previous administration as well as our current issues. COME ON GET REAL!!! You need to light a fire under Congress. Capital Hill is nothing but a country club where nothing is getting done!!!

The former president of Penn State is being charged today along with the University police chief and deputy, who the prosecution claims conspired to keep Sanduskys' perversions secret, and to be handled internally.
Nobody has charged George Bush or Dick Cheney for their incompetence, criminal behavior, crimes against humanity, violations of the Geneva Convention, torture and kidnapping, along with Cheney's shooting in Texas and his pressuring the CIA to mislead congress with false intelligence reports...When will they face the judge?
Furthermore, WTC did not fall because 2 commercial jets hit the towers, they fell because someone planted nanothermite in the carpets, foam walls and elevators.
Jetfuel burns at 500+ degrees, titanium infrastructure melts at over 2500.
Even a test that shows it can be compromised at much lower temps dont show how the entire towers system can collapse the way it did. Nanothermite explains many questions like how the towers turned to dust and at the base of the towers the titanium was found in a pool of molten metal.

As for this story, Romney is not my pick, but I believe all American cars should be built in America. China is taking jobs away from Americans by pressuring the manufactures to build there. That is why GM did so well last year in China.

GM stole the pensions from non-union employees (in litigation) with the Obama Federal Government approval. Obama made sure only union employees (11%) of the GM employees received jobs and the rest were discarded and lost their lives savings as Obama did nothing to help them (majority of employees). In the meantime, according to a July 2011 CBO, 2012 report, the 2009 stimulus did not create "One single new job" and only sustained 700,000 existing government and union jobs. Obama gave stimulus monies to 60%, or $499 billion of the 2009 Stimulus monies to hire employees not in the U.S. but overseas (YouTube.com / FNC, 2 May 2012 / CBO, 2 May 2012, DOE, PV Magazine, 20 October 2010, ABC News, 11 October 2011, Pittsburg Tribute, 16 November 2011 / FNC-Hannity, 14 May 2012). According to Hannity, Fox, the following table shows how many jobs stayed in the U.S. versus overseas for the General Eclectic (GE) and General Motors (GM) companies (FNC-Hannity, guest, 15 May 2012). Countries that received those monies include China, Mexico, Finland, etc. (CBO, 2009-2012) as Obama told Americans that these monies would help bring the job rate down and we know that never happened and why that did not happed.
