Gabby Douglas the new cover girl for Corn Flakes

(CBS News) On Friday morning, U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas woke up with her second Olympic gold medal.

But now the 16-year-old Douglas stands to really strike it rich with product endorsements.

Kellogg's was quick to pounce, putting the golden girl on Corn Flakes boxes just hours after the gymnast claimed the all-around title Thursday.

Kelloggs

As Reuters notes, Kellogg Co. acted just as quickly in 2008, when the cereal giant lured Michael Phelps as an endorser after his historic performance at the Beijing Games. Prior to that, Olympic stars had traditionally appeared on the front of Wheaties, which is made by rival General Mills.

The Kellogg deal likely won't be the last for Douglas, who is nicknamed the "Flying Squirrel."

"As a 16-year-old, she has really got kind of the sky is the limit. She brings so many intangibles that marketers look for. She's young. She's fresh. She's a new face," media consultant Joe Favorito told CBS News.

Douglas is the first African-American to make the U.S. women's gymnastics team since her idol, Dominique Dawes, in 1996.

Dawes told CBS News that Douglas can expect endorsement deals to begin pouring in. She said, "(Gabby is) going to start quickly recognizing that she's a business, she's a brand, and she should be very selective in the people she surrounds herself with and the opportunities she decides to take."

Phelps is white and no one will ever have as many Gold metals as him. What does race have to do with it? If the other girl gymnists were put above Gabby people would scream racism. I think Gabby did a great job as well as the other girls. Race has nothing to do with it. This is sickening.

I don't know how much Kellogg's is paying her, but considering that just training for an Olympic level gymnast can easily run a quarter of a million dollars or more, and that doesn't include the cost of airline tickets to all of the various meets she has to compete in to even get to the Olympic qualification level, and that she only gets $25,000 for each gold medal (of which Uncle Sam takes 35%), one Corn Flakes endorsement probably doesn't even come close to breaking even.

As Dominique Dawes said, Gabby's face and her name is now a brand, and I really hope she has good, honest financial advisers to help her. Of course, I would imagine that Shawn Johnson (who trained at the same gym and with the same coach Gabby did) can give her some good tips and warn her of some pit-falls, too.

Iowa loves Gabby, just as we adored our Shawn. I hope she has a blast during the rest of her stay in London, and we're all waiting to give her a huge Iowa welcome home!

Adorable, talented, sweet and smart young lady! I think she'll continue to be able to do whatever she puts her mind to! Her family must be very proud. After she won the gold it was wonderful to see her Mom relax and let it all out. I'm sure it's been a long road. Enjoy the ride!!

First, congrats to Gabby and all the hard word she and all the olympians who have spent years and years of dedicating themselves to achieve what they have and what they deserve - for Gabby the gold and all that comes with it. I trust she will be guided by wise adults and parents to not be a pawn to the marketers out there ready to pounce!
On another note, I am very disturbed that the first thing that came out of the NBC commentator's mouth, after Gabby won gold, was directed to the fact that Gabby is black and that hopefully this will be an inspiration to other young black girls to dream and go for things like Abby has. WHAT A STUPID COMMENT and a RACIALLY DIVIDING ONE as well. Gabby is a person- red, black, while, yellow, whatever- she won, she is equal, as we all are equal. WHY IS THE NEWS MAKING THIS A RACE ISSUE?????? WHY IS NBC MAKING THIS A RACE ISSUE????? Gabby didn't win because she is black, she won because she worked hard, was blessed with awesome skills and had all the things that a athlete needed to complete and task - SKIN COLOR HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING! I REALLY AM SEEING MORE AND MORE THAT IT IS THE MEDIA THAT IS CAUSING RACIAL DIVIDE MORE THAN ANY PERSON in the general public. HEY NBC, CBS and ALL THE OTHER MEDIA PEOPLE WHO ARE FOCUSING ON GABBY'S SKIN COLOR - STOP BEING RACIST!

They aren't focusing on her "skin color". It's because the previous All-Around gold medalist have been won by young White ladies. Gabby winning the All-Around is history making and it is a great achievement that says you can succeed if you have the determination and support of your family.

The commentator is stupid. Everyone with common sense knows 1) that only a few people will be olympic winners. 2) Everyone male and female, gay, lesbian, transgender or straight, all races, all ages, all religions, all cultures, etc should be inspired to have a vision and reach for the highest that they can achieve. 3) There are a variety of gifts and talents required to keep the world moving. There are people in healthcare that save lives, policeman that are called when someone feels threatened or violated, educators that provide a foundation for the country, the environmentalists, those that work to provide food, those that provide transportation, those that build hospitals and houses, the fireman, correctional officers, those that provide technology, custodians (if we relied on news commentators to clean, the country would not be fit to live in), those in the funeral industry, accountants, ministers, entertainers, those that build corporations and employ thousands, the small business owners, the economists, secretaries, the list can go on and on. Most young black girls will grow up and join in with everyone else working hard to serve mankind in one way or another. If you notice I did not include those that work in the media. I deliberately left them out because most of them like to create a lot of s**t, at other peoples expense, and destroy everyone that they can to try and get an award or a promotion.

When the press asked Gabriel how she felt about being the first black american woman to win gold in gymnastics, she said that she had not really been thinking about it. If that kind of feeling of being part of a whole and not a unique section can be fostered, we are making progress.

Gabby is not the first African American gymnast since Dawes to be named to an Olympic team. Tasha Schwikert was on the team in 2000.
