High school hoops star scores 71 points, team still loses

(CBS) - With 71 points, eight three-pointers, and 47 points in the second half, Lakeview Christian Academy's Anders Broman had a special night. Too bad his team still lost. It is one of the strangest stat lines you're likely to see in high school basketball. But win or lose, Broman had a night to remember.

Lakeview lost 114-110 to Melrose Area High in a game that would be high-scoring by NBA standards. Broman's 71 points were the second most in the history of Minnesota high school basketball. He went 8-for-13 from three-point range and shot 67-percent overall.

Broman is now the second-highest scorer in state history, and as a junior he still has another year ahead of him. But still his team came up short.

"That's what I was mad about; it was a bittersweet game," Broman told the Duluth News Tribune after the defeat.

"I made a couple 3's to start the [second] half, so I started feeling it," he told the paper. "It felt like everything I shot would go in. I love when those days happen."

The 6-foot-1 junior's current season total of 1,040 points ranks among the top five of all-time. He was also the youngest player in Minnesota history to reach 3,000 career points. The News Tribune reports that Broman is being recruited by Virginia Tech, Northwestern and San Diego State, among others.

So it's surprising that a player who obviously ignored that fact that basketball is a TEAM sport (i.e. ball hog) ended up on a losing team? Errrrr.......

Sorry but I don't find it surprising that a winning TEAM requires TEAMwork and a TEAM of players rather than just one guy zipping around shooting baskets.

So, can no one else in the starting five or on the bench score a single bucket? How can one player put up 71 and still be on the losing side? Those other starters should be expelled.
