NFLer proposes through mail, wants ring returned

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams sure dropped the ball with his recent marriage proposal.

According to the Odessa American, Williams is suing his ex-girlfriend, former 2009 Miss Texas USA Brooke Daniels, in order to get a $76,000 engagement ring he gave her.

Only, he didn't exactly give it to her. He mailed it to her.

According to the Odessa American: "In an affidavit signed by Williams, he claims he sent $5,000 for school and dental bills, a baseball for Daniels' brother and -- as a surprise -- a recorded marriage proposal with the ring through the mail just before Valentine's Day to Daniels. However, when Daniels declined the proposal, she did not return the ring."

Read the affidavit

Ouch. We're not sure what is worse - Daniels dissing the proposal and keeping the ring or Williams proposing marriage via the United States Postal Service.

Not surprisingly, Williams doesn't want to talk about it.

"It's a non-issue," he told ESPN on Wednesday.

Apparently he's right because Daniels' father, Michael Daniels, says that he has the ring and it will be returned to Williams.

"I want to wash my hands of it," Michael Daniels, who is named as a defendant, told the Odessa American. "It's just a hassle. I'll take care of my daughter. I don't need him."

But, for the record, the beauty queen's dad claims Williams didn't want the ring back, even after Daniels decided she didn't want to marry him.

"He said to her, 'I'm not like a lot of people, I don't want the ring back. You'll eventually come back to me,' and she didn't."

No word on whether the ring will be returned first-class or priority delivery.

So the guy is a fool. But who cares? This is junk news. There are lot more important things going on the world for the media to cover.

That is one of the dumbest things I've ever read about.
It is also one of the dumbest news stories CBS news has ever reported on.

The guy thought he was being clever, doing something totally different. Give him a break. Proposing marriage to anyone can be a terrifying ordeal. Maybe the Beauty queen also has a stomp on the heart attitude and he hoped this way might save him a little heartache. Instead, now he's a worldwide laughingstock. How about the guy who gave a $5,000 engagement ring to a waiter to be put in the dessert. Instead the waiter called a friend and he gave the ring to the accomplice. Is that guy stupid? How about the countless people who propose through some enormous Jumbotron at a sports arena? Are they stupid and gutless, not having the guts to do it face-to-face and actually putting the woman on the spot. If she doesn't say "Yes" she knows the news reports are going to be about how she stomped on the guy. Heck, any guy who doesn't propose in the most private of circumstances is stupid because you can't know what the answer is going to be. Better to minimize your humiliations -- which is what the football player thought he was doing. Shrug. It may have even been an inside "joke" between them.

I don't blame her, any man that sends an engagement ring and marriage proposal through the mail deserves what he gets. She needs to move on and find a MAN that will treat her like a lady.

Then you have no morals. If she rejects his proposal, she should return the ring. Sure, the guy was wrong to propose that way, but keeping the ring is just low class.

We've got the best postal system in the world, but that doesn't make it a good way to propose (might be among the worst). Still, let's consider cutting him a little slack. The guy got rejected, and now people are laughing at him. That's a bummer no matter how much money you make.
