Emmy Awards Fashion 2012: Best-dressed and hottest trends

/ CBS/Getty Images(CBS News) Modern glamour: That's how stylist Emmy Award-winning stylist David Zyla would sum up 2012 Emmy Awards fashion.
"I think everyone kind of got the memo," Zyla told CBSNews.com. "Overall, I saw a very modern approach. It felt very chic...Everything was very beautiful and very elegant."

Celebrities also displayed some of the season's hottest trends: From bold colors and blues to asymmetrical styles. The look was clean and simple, with a few risks taken here and there, said Zyla, who has collaborated with the likes of Hillary Clinton, Tom Hanks and Susan Lucci.
But unlike the recent Video Music Awards, which featured a lot of grays, blacks and silvers, we saw a lot of bright colors on the Emmys red carpet.
"The drape of the fabrics was one of the most exciting trends that came out of it," said Zyla, pointing out Jennifer Westfeldt and Hayden Panettiere's gowns.
Zyla also loved the asymmetrical nature of Panettiere's dress, as well as Jessica Pare's one-shoulder white number by Jason Wu. "It fit her so beautifully," he said.

Ginnifer Goodwin's red and sheer strapless Monique Lhuillier gown was one of the biggest hits of the night. Goodwin "went out on a limb - and it could have gone wrong - but it was great," said Stacy London, co-host of TLC's "What Not to Wear. "It had the biggest impact on me," she told The Associated Press.
Most surprising
When asked who surprised him the most, Zyla said - "30 Rock" star Tina Fey. "I have never seen her look more beautiful," he said. "The plum color was amazing," he added, calling her look "effortless."
Blue and teal all over
It was hard not to notice the various shades of blue all over the red carpet - from navy and royal, to ocean and turquoise. "It almost became the red of previous years," said Zyla, author of "Color Your Style: How to Wear Your True Colors."
Heidi Klum's Alexandre Vauthier gown, with its plunging neckline and daringly high slit, impressed celebrity stylists, including Zyla. Louise Roe, Glamour editor-at-large and "Fashion Star" host, told The Associated Press it was one of her favorites, too.
Zyla said that Jane Levy looked beautiful in her Pamella Roland royal chiffon, cap-sleeved gown. He also liked Sofia Vergara's turquoise choice by Zuhair Murad, with beads and a cutout.
"We saw a lot of blue, and it looked very fresh. The shapes were simple," Zyla said.
Color me yellow
"Yellow - isn't that exciting for this time of year?," Zyla said, noting that goldenrod is a color that continue to pop up for fall 2012.
Donning the golden hue at the Emmys were Claire Danes in a strapless Lanvin dress and Julianne Moore in a long-sleeve gown by Raf Simons for Christian Dior. Julie Bowen and Leslie Mann also sported the daffodil color.
Doing the tango
Besides yellow, we also saw stars wearing "tangerine tango," Pantome's color of the year. "We saw that in some very fresh silhouettes, like Padma Lakshmi in her Monique Lhuillier gown," said Zyla.
Black done different
Although bold colors were everywhere on this year's red carpet, stars also donned black - but this time, in unexpected ways.
"A lot of people think that black is boring or safe, but I think this year it was anything but that," said Zyla. "The play of sheer and solid, origami folds and asymmetrical hemlines - it was exciting to see that. January Jones is someone who did it really well."
Fashion missteps
When asked about any fashion misses, Zyla said in his opinion, no star had a major red carpet faux pas. If anything, some celebrities played it too simple, or safe.
Louise Roe, Glamour editor-at-large and "Fashion Star" host, told The Associated Press that she didn't love Elisabeth Moss' printed, Dolce & Gabbana gown because it had too much "fussy detail."
Roe said that Emily VanCamp could have added a little something extra instead of donning her J. Mendel gown with pleats and sheer fabric. "She's young and has a killer body - she could have played around a bit more," Roe told the AP.

I'm not a fashionista but I'm puzzled why men can were nothing but suit, tie, repeat. Whereas women can be in half-naked, skintight dresses (not that I mind)or whatever they feel like.
A bit over the top I know but, when it comes to formal-wear especially, guys are like the women obligated to wear burqas. No options, one size fits all carbon copies. Sorry, I forgot, we can choose different colour ties. I guess maybe it's because anything else might seem 'flamboyant' but as a hetero male I find it pretty limiting.
Thought Zac Posen to himself vomiting..."Please Kelly just wash your hair, don't eat anything for 72 hours prior to arrival and for crying out loud please wipe off that monstrous smirk off your face."
