(CBS News) Some Democrats are hoping Betty White will make their day by speaking at the Democratic National Convention this week.

petition on Change.org and a group on Facebook are calling for the actress to introduce President Barack Obama at the DNC, just as Clint Eastwood did for Mitt Romney at the Republican National Convention.

The petition, written by Peter Slutsky of Brooklyn, N.Y., says that Eastwood, 82, "gave a bad name to older Americans everywhere" with his "absurd and awkward-to-watch" speech at the GOP convention, which included him speaking to an imaginary Mr. Obama in an empty chair beside him on the stage.

"Governor Romney can have Clint Eastwood and his improvisational skills because President Obama has the one and only Betty White!" the petition continued. By 12:22 p.m. on Tuesday, 7,956 people had supported the cause.

On Facebook, a group called "Bring Betty White to the DNC" has more than 28,000 members as of Tuesday afternoon.

White, 90, endorsed Mr. Obama for reelection in May, telling the Associated Press that she "very, very much favors" the president and that she likes what he has done and "how he represents us." She also paid a visit to the White House in June, spending some time in the Oval Office with the president and walking on the South Lawn with the first dog, Bo.

Earlier this year, the president filmed a birthday greeting for White, joking that he didn't believe she was 90 and asking to see a copy of her birth certificate.

This is not he first time White has been the target of a Facebook campaign. She was guest host on "Saturday Night Live" in May of 2010 after more than half a million people joined a Facebook campaign to get her on the NBC show.

The Democratic National Convention kicks off Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are scheduled to speak on Thursday.

This seems childish to me. My daddy is bigger than your daddy. My mommy can cook better than yours. My 90 year old can say more clever things than yours, so elect me to run the most powerful country in the world. This is just a sign of the times I guess.

Betty could skewer Eastwood, Romney and Ryan on the sharp barb of her wit. I hope she gets that opportunity!
