Anti-Obama doc stays strong at the box office

A new documentary from conservative author Dinesh D'Souza has become an unexpected hit in theaters this summer-movie season. Produced on an estimated budget of just $2.5 million, "2016: Obama's America," has taken in almost $12.5 million at the box office so far.

According to Box Office Mojo, "2016" earned more than $6.5 million in ticket sales last weekend alone (when the documentary went into wider release following a limited run), even beating out the big-budget Hollywood production "Premium Rush" in its opening weekend.

"2016" Box Office Ticket Sales

FACT CHECK: Anti-Obama film muddy on facts

In the documentary, D'Souza suggests that Obama is carrying out an anti-American agenda, based on the so-called teachings of his Kenyan father.

While the film has been universally panned by critics, and the accuracy of the facts have been put into question, ticket sales continue to be strong. In terms of box office, "2016" has been deemed the most successful conservative documentary of all time.

But what impact D'Souza's passion project will have on the outcome of this year's election remains to be seen, until November.

What gets me is that half if not all the people that commented here probably didn't even go see the movie. They're so brain-washed about how Obama can do no wrong!! Think again and watch the closing remarks of the movie. They're downright scary!!! Obama is as anti-American as they come and if you support him YOUR JUST THE SAME.

Another example of a foreigner coming in taking the money of low information voters, by just feeding them made up contrived facts, with little or no accountability. This de Souza is laughng all the way to the bank by telling lies and stating emphatically what's inside someone else's head without the credentials to do so.He dated Coulter, so we know that his facts are just as sketchy as hers.

I love how you say no accountability! The man (De'souza) traveled halfway around the world to get his facts straight. Better check your tiny "brain washed" facts again!! This movie tells it like it is and without the Micheal Moore approach. Why are you people so close minded about a president selling this country down the road into a third-world ranking???

Hello CBS: "Documentary: based on or re-creating an actual event, era, life story, etc., that purports to be factually accurate and contains no fictional elements"

This movie is a political opinion piece about a fictional world in 2016, not a documentary. It's as factual as the PAC ad claiming Obama's ACA would have saved the cancer victim who lost her insurance even though she was sill covered on her husband's plan.

The red pants are on fire, the blue pants are on fire, and we the public are getting burned. Enough already!

Probably won't be long.

Preaching to the choir never affected the general election.

These Republicans believe winning is more important than honesty with the American People. We almost went out to watch it until will read the review about the lies, mistruths, and overall disception of the financial backers of the Romney Ryan rabblerousers of the GOP. Looks like they fooled the American Taxpayers taht paid to see this Attackamentary because it certainly wasn't full of factual data.
Republicans only show their lack of integrity with this kind of behavior.

Talk about lies, mistruths and overall deceptions. that is what your post is full of The movie maker takes looks at the facts and then puts forth his conlcusions and opinions. the fact that they differ from yours don't make them untrue. Furthermore, the president just said the other day during his so called "you didnt build that" speech that everyone had a coach or teacher or pasture that helped you and influenced your life. did he not? So, pay attention here, if the president is saying the people you were close to influenced you, IS IT REALLY UNTRUE TO BELIEVE THAT THOSE AROUND HIM INFLUENCED HIM? By objectively listening to people and forming your OWN conclusion is what makes us grow as a person. the president can't have it both ways.

Sir, you post has some disception doesn't it? You basically imply the film is untruthful and deceiving and insuate the Romney was somehow involved. Live your convictions sir. You haven't even seen the movie or done any fact checking yourself. The movie maker essentially looks at all of the facts, solicits input from others and the forms his OPINIONS and CONCLUSIONS. The fact that they differ from yours doesn't make them untrue. The president recently said in his so called "you didn't build that" speech that everyone had a teacher, coach or mentor that helped and influenced you along the way. so, pay attention here, IS IT TO HARD TO BELEIVE THAT THE PEOPLE AROUND THE PRESIDENT INFLUENCED HIM? He can't have it both ways. "the people in your life incluenced you but the people in my life didn't influence me" It doesn't work that way sir. I would offer some advice. Don't read other peoples opinion and then adopt them as your own. Go out and review for yourself and form your own opinion. Then you will not be speaking for others. good Luck!

Your post is exactly what is wrong with this country. We are NOT enemies. We all want the same thing. We have different opninions on how to achieve it. If you beleive in the truth above your ideaology you would have to admit that this president has not done a very good job. He didn't accomplish hardly anything he said he could do. We allowed him to spend over 12 TRILLION dollars and look at the state of the country. All we here is what others did and excuses for his failure. Do you have any idea what his plan is to do better? nobody does. we think we can do better. In any other function in life, performance like this would be dealt with by replacing the leader.
