Coldplay's Chris Martin messes up lyrics, blames deep Olympic thoughts

(CBS News) It's not unheard of for music artists to forget lyrics while performing live. But to blame London's Summer Olympics for the mistake? Now that's a different story.

That's exactly what happened when Coldplay's Chris Martin messed up the lyrics to "Warning Sign" at Boston's TD Garden this week.

After the mistake, he stopped mid-song and joked, "I was thinking about the Olympics. I was distracted. I was not in the breakup frame of mind that I should have been. I'm gonna get back into it. I'm going to stop thinking about pole vaulting and things like that ... I'm going to focus on the song."

The crowd cheered before the British singer-songwriter added, "It's a big deal. We've never had the Olympics in our lifetime so you can't blame a band for thinking about it every once in a while ... What's more important is the best concert in the world is happening right here, right now, so we'd better carry on."

After more crowd cheers, Martin continued with the joke: "[Expletive] the Olympics. Let's have a [expletive] great time in Boston."

He then launched back into the song, only to stop again to tell the audience, "Please don't tweet that I said '[Expletive] the Olympics'... Please don't turn it into a news story, whatever you do ... I'll never hear the end of it."

Despite Martin's best efforts, there have been plenty of tweets - and now news stories - about his Olympic comments. And there's video, too. You can watch here.

I find this story and others like it decently pathetic. I was at that concert and it was quite clear to anyone with a noggin that Chris just forgot the lyrics. Due to his great sense of humor and love for his country, he teased about being focused on the Olympics. I find it absolutely pathetic that any negative press should come of that jovial statement. What will come of performers if they can't joke and enjoy the audience they give so much of themselves to. I would like to see a positive spin put on this story and the truth to surface.
