(CBS News) AMC has canceled "The Killing" after two seasons, but the detective drama could find a new home on another network.

"The Killing" finale: Rosie Larsen's murderer didn't see it coming

After much deliberation, we've come to the difficult decision not to renew 'The Killing' for a third season," the network said in a statement, obtained by Deadline. "AMC is incredibly proud of the show and is fortunate to have worked with such a talented team on this project, from showrunner Veena Sud and our terrific partners at Fox Television Studios to the talented, dedicated crew and exceptional cast."

Fox Television Studios also released a statement, saying it plans to shop the series to other networks: "Fox Television Studios is extremely proud of 'The Killing,' the extraordinary writing staff and crew, and what we believe is one of the best casts on television. We will proceed to try to find another home for the show."

"The Killing," which debuted in 2011, centered around two Seattle detectives (Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman) investigating the murder of a teenaged girl. The show, which opened strong with 2.7 million viewers, went on to infuriate fans and critics alike when the killer's identity was not revealed during the first-season finale, as had been expected.

When the show returned in April for season 2, ratings dropped 33 percent to 1.8 million viewers and never recovered. The mystery of who killed Rosie Larsen was finally solved at the end of that season.

Say it isn't so! The Killing was one of the best written shows on TV. It was well worth waiting for Season 2 and didn't disappoint! The two main characters, Mireille Enos & Joel Kinnaman, did a fine job of acting. I already purchased Season 1 on DVD and intend to also purchase Season 2 when it becomes available. Hopefully there will be a Season 3! Who do we need to talk to??

I am very disappointed in AMC's decision not to keep The Killing. It is one of my very favorite shows. I didn't mind having to wait 2 seasons to find out who the killer was. It always stayed interesting and exciting. I liked the way each episode was the next day in the investigation, which in my opinion, made it more real. I think AMC has made a big mistake and I hope Fox Television Studios can find a home for a 3rd season and many many more!

I can not believe with all the other junk that is on TV that this great program is being cancelled!!!!!!! This is one of the only shows I made sure I watched and looked forward to season two! Very disappointed in the network!

I always really looked forward to that show and never missed a single episode. Those folks who were annoyed at not getting an answer at the end of the first series are just a bunch of babies. It was well acted, realistic, very interesting characters who were human. Lots of different angles, struggling family, immigrants, corrupt officials and crooked Vegas-like setting. Really kept me guessing. I really hope you can find a new site for this show as I want to see what happens next in Mirelle's life - her career, her son, her love life, her relationship with her partner. Please don't disappoint me.

I loved that show. It was done so well, and I think given a little more time, it would have had a strong following. The Sunday format was fine until Downton Abbey started and it was a hard choice, but I followed the shows on netflix, so I did know what was going on.
Please, let's start a campaign and save it.
