(CBS News) Brad Pitt's mother has taken aim at both President Barack Obama and same-sex marriage in a letter published this week in The Springfield News-Leader.

In the note, Jane Pitt throws her support behind Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, while she voices her disdain for same-sex marriage and abortion.

Jane wrote her letter in response to another piece, titled "Vote for Mormon against beliefs," which expressed support for Christians who don't vote for Romney because of his Mormon beliefs.

She began by stating that she's a Christian, who differs with the Mormon religion.

"But I think any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon," she wrote in the letter titled "Election-Casting ballot deserves prayerful consideration."

"Any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney's opponent, Barack Hussein Obama - a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright's church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage," Pitt continued.

Pitt  concluded: "I hope all Christians give their vote prayerful consideration because voting is a sacred privilege and a serious responsibility."

Brad Pitt, who grew up in Springfield, Mo., spoke about his mother to The Hollywood Reporter in January. "She's very, very loving -- very open, genuine, and it's hilarious because she always gets painted in the tabloids as a she-devil. There's not an ounce of malice in her. She wants everyone to be happy," he said.

Brad, meanwhile, has supported the president and been very vocal about his support for same-sex marriage. At one point he told Ellen DeGeneres, "I've said that we would not be getting married until everyone in this country had the right to get married."

The actor and Angelina Jolie got engaged in April.

Let me make sure I understand "Mamma Pitt." Brad commits adultery while being married to Jenn A, he is "shack-n up" and practicing fornication with Angie J and she writes a letter bashing Obama for his lack of CHRISTIAN values and support of gay marriage!! Its funny how some "so-called" Christians pick and choose what is anti-christian behavior....Ms. Shenelle Collins

Well, she was writing a political letter regarding the election; I presume she expresses her views about her son's behavior in private, like most parents would.

superwoman01 Mrs. Pitt is a woman who's son is a grown man. He also no longer lives in his mother's house. While we might control what happens under our roofs, there's no way that anyone can control what their children do when they're grown and no longer living in our house. That includes Mrs. Pitt.

All they can do is pray for their children and know that they brought their children up right. That is all parents can do and if their children choose to go against their teaching when they're adults that isn't their parents' fault.

Children aren't clones of their parents. They're individuals with minds of their own.

You can always spot the bigots....they're the one who use Obama's full name, as if saying "Hussein" will convince us all that somehow he's not qualified or poses some sort of threat....laughable except for the easily led and misled who think any of it matters.

I totally agree with Mrs. Pitt and I don't agree with her son. However, he has a right to his opinion and the Constitution gives him the same rights that it gives his mother and me. One of those rights is the freedom of speech that it gives all US citizens including Christians and non-Christians.

however, this is not about freedom of speech...her letter was meant to state why she is not voting for Obama and supporting Romney and it is based on his stance on same-sex marriage and the want to use Christianity as a tool to justify why NOT to vote for Obama...which is ironic when her son and "daughter in law" ain't livin the "so-called" Christian valued life...so basically, Mama Pitt need to get somewhere and sit down

She was just giving her views to her local paper and someone noticed it, I guess. I don't agree with her opinions--to put it mildly--but from the headlines I was expecting some psychotic, wigged-out rant, when her words were actually fairly typical, temperately expressed, mainstream conservative Christian ideology. Next story, please.

more from the "pro-oppressing-the-rights-and-free-will-of-all-that-don't-think-exactly-like-us-'good'-christians" sect... ironic that they use their religious freedom to decide all "non-self-righteous" Christian are not entitled to the same religious freedom.... and yes, I already know they are unable (unwilling?) to wrap their brains around the concept. somewhere along the line, they grew tired of counting their blessings.... they are restless at the foot of their own stairway to heaven and figured they would decide and judge. What is that Ghandi quote? "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians". These are the 'christians' he was referring too...

I am with you brother, the guide to life written in a time of slavery, sexual discrimination, when the world was flat AND the center of the universe somehow doesn't seem relevant anymore.

And too many "religious" people completely miss the point of love and tolerance and use it to spread hate and judgement. Shame on you.

It was Christians that fought slavery in this country, not a bunch of democrats!
