Cruise's rep told People that Holmes filed for divorce, adding, "Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."

"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest," Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People.

TMZ reports that Holmes cited irreconcilable differences in divorce papers, filed Thursday, and she's asking for sole legal custody and "primary residential custody" of the couple's 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Holmes didn't accompany Cruise to the recent "Rock of Ages" red carpet premieres. But they did step out together as recently as February at an Oscar party.

Cruise, 49, married Holmes, 33, in Italy in November 2006.

The actors began dating in April 2005, and shortly after, the media dubbed them "TomKat." Cruise expressed his love for Holmes during a visit to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" while famously jumping up and down on the couch. In October of that year, the couple announced they were expecting a baby. A year later, they were married. In the years since, the Hollywood pair have been subject to various tabloid reports, though they've always defended their love for each other. Some tabloids even reported that Holmes had signed a contract, stating she would stay married for five years.

In the June 2012 issue of Playboy, Cruise gushed over Holmes, saying, "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better."

Cruise has been married twice before - first to Mimi Rogers and then to Nicole Kidman. He has two children with Kidman.

Tom, really turned me off to himself, when I watched him on the Oprah show, not only jumping up and down on the couch, but I felt he was also disrespectful to his ex-wives.
Katie, was forced to sign a 5 year contract, stating she would stay married at least that long, to Tom. Is that a scientology must?
I am so surprised, that Katie even made it that long with Tom Cruise. Having a cult dictating where you have "your" baby, no drugs and no screaming allowed. Also if you have postpartum depression, you can't take a drug. With a husband so immersed in scientology, and him and them dictating your every move, I would want to get my child out of that environment as well.
Good luck Katie, getting yourself and Suri, away from all of this craziness.

The Feds wiped out the Branch Davidians, why can't they do the same to Scientologist?

I wish particularly Tom Cruise well. I am so sick of all the hypocrites (eg. this comment blog) pointing out his flaws medicating that small minded pride within to exhibit the weakest part of their human mind.

I guess being married to a gay, midget, cultist has its downside.

I wonder how much he'll pay her to keep quiet?

What real woman could stay married to an egotistical, short guy with a "small man" complex. Money can't buy true happiness, and this is all Cruise has to offer any woman. I predict he'll be married at least four more times before he either runs out of money, or loses his celebrity status and becomes another "has been" who fades off into the sunset. I think he has always been an "overacting" actor, ever since "Topgun" and would never go to any of his overrated showboating movies.

Congratulations, Ms. Holmes. It appears that the five year acting gig may have a decent pay-out. You will have accomplished a very popular American dream: Be an independantly wealthy milf with the requisite trophy spawn. 'Well played.

I bet she takes her money and runs like a gold digger. I feel sorry for him because he seemed happy and accepted for himself. She seemed to be endlessly shopping in the pictures I saw of her. And the blindside techinque shows me shame on her part, not bravery.

I don't like either one of them, BUT...

Why would you call her a gold digger? Just because she wants out of a marriage to a control freak? Maybe she wants out because of the Scientology bullcrap? Not that she will escape, but he's into it big time.

You feel sorry for him because he seemed happy? When was that? Years ago when he was jumping up and down on the couch? Actors always pretend they are happy, right up until the divorce.

She seemed to be shopping in the pictures you saw and so that means she was ALWAYS shopping? How many pictures of her were there?

And lastly, how do you REALLY know that it was a blindside? Because the media told you so?

If it was a blindside, and with her doing it while he was away, that was probably the only way she could get away from him.

Because she wants 50% after only 5 years. I'm not into scientology, but she knew that when she married him, thus her problem, he didn't hide it. And yes, those thoughts are on what the media is saying, although I do know people around them when they did seem happy.

The list of headlines on the Home Page aren't JUST for hard news, but news for OTHER categories as well. These are stories that are "priorities" for their PARTICULAR subject. Many news organizations present material this way online; it's NOT just CBS.

This category is "Celebrities". There are also stories on the Olympic Trials on the CBS home page today too. So if you click on one of those stories, you just MIGHT find yourself in the Sports section.
