No word on funeral for legendary Doc Watson

(CBS/AP) WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Colleagues and fans of the legendary guitarist Doc Watson are still waiting for word on funeral plans.

Watson, whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world for more than a half-century, died two days ago at a hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was 89 and had been hospitalized for a while.

The master flatpicker on the acoustic guitar was known for fast fingering that would intimidate other musicians. But many of those very artists say Watson was a humble man who was generous with his fellow musicians.

Doc Watson's honors include the National Medal of the Arts in 1997 and the lifetime achievement award from the Grammys in 2004.

We have lost an American Treasure. He played with such accuracy and spirit. I've was fortunate enough to see him on multiple occasions. It was always a joyous and moving experience. Doc Watson was one of the best interpreters of American music we will ever see. He will be greatly missed.
