Ryan Seacrest pulls proposal fake-out on "American Idol"

(CBS News) Ryan Seacrest popped a question to girlfriend Julianne Hough during Wednesday's "American Idol" - but it wasn't that question.

Hough was in the audience to promote her upcoming film "Rock of Ages" with director Adam Shankman, when Seacrest came over and asked her to stand up.

He said there was a question he had been meaning to ask her.

"Oh God," Hough said, turning away briefly.

"Will you," Seacrest said - slowly reaching into his jacket pocket - "give this note I wrote to ["Rock of Ages" co-star] Tom Cruise?"

"I am such a big fan; I loved him in 'Cocktail,'" he continued.

Hough, being a good sport, smiled and agreed - but then bantered right back.

"Wait, but didn't we write that [note] together last night?!" she joked.
