(CBS News) Beyonce is adding a new accolade to her award-winning resume - but this one isn't for her music.

The singer is being honored with a writing award from the New York Association of Black Journalists.

The award is for an article she penned in the July 2011 issue of Essence magazine. The story, titled "Eat, Play, Love," chronicled her nine-month hiatus from the music industry in 2010, before returning to record her album "4."

"I had talked about taking a vacation before, but always ended up in the studio after two weeks, so no one believed me. This time, though, I was serious. I was going to give myself a year to do the things I never get to do," she wrote. "Simple things like play with my nephew, pick him up from school, visit museums, go to concerts, see some Broadway shows, learn to cook a meal and spend time with my husband... Yes, I needed some relaxation, but I wanted inspiration too, from regular everyday things. They did not have to be over-the-top productions. I was looking for tiny moments that would speak to my heart and make me smile..."

"She's a real writer. We had to edit her, but everyone gets edited except Toni Morrison," Essence entertainment director Cori Murray told the New York Daily News.

The New York Association of Black Journalists will host its annual awards banquet on May 15.

The award begs the question from many however of the extent to which the money and people worship that is going on in our community will continue, particularly in news and media circuits. At times it appears that it has reached such sad proportions that one must be careful to trust anything that is read anymore.

What about those who each day challenge their readers on such difficult issues as economic disparity, failing educational systems and crime epidemics in our community? One might venture to say that there is not much serious journalism being composed these days, in African American or any other media venue. If that is true, then they may as well acknowledge one of their own
