Depp may have been miscast, thought he'd be the Lone Ranger, and Tonto should have been played by the male protagonist in "miss congeniality" whose name escapes me, sorry to say. Come to think of it, "tonto', which means 'fool' in spanish, isn't a very nice name for him.

I,for one am not going to judge it until I see it. I posted a reply here somewhere that Depp, himself has said that he has N.A. heritage. Either Crow or Creek. As for the headdress and costume, check this link out. I like to do a little research before commenting.

"Tell us what you think of this photo"....It is disgusting and disrespectful to the memory of Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheel(the original Lone Ranger and Tonto. Depp, unshaven, looks like he's been on a drunk for 3 days and that Indian next to him is hideous. Tonto never could have gone into towns in those days, getting information by being unobtrusive if he looked like the warrior from hell. If they don't stick to the photos of the long ago Lone Ranger, this film will be a bust before it is even released. What were they thinking. I truly enjoyed the Lone Ranger & Tonto when I was a kid and this picture of them truly SUCKS!!!!

Except for the mask, NOTHING about it even faintly says Lone Ranger. Did he ever wear the mask AND a badge? I thought the Texas Ranger died when the Lone Ranger was born. Tonto's head gear is more "Quest for Fire" or "Apocalypse Now" than Tonto. All that said, I'll watch it because Depp hasn't failed me yet, and I'm an optimist...

And the Lone Ranger always wore a White outfit, not a black one. And Tonto certainly did not look like he was on his way to a Halloween Party for adults.

Looks like its gonna be a comedy - having a white guy play Tonto is an insult l'm like one poster on he commented if you gonna do a remake be true to the original. Personally l liked the remake of Steve McQueens "The Get Away" they re did that movie almost exactly to the original. "Clash of The Titans" last year was a pretty good remake even though they left out the golden owl (they gave him a cameo) and Pegasus was Black instead of white like the original.
One movie i hope they never remake unless they stay true to the original is my favorite movie of all time "The Magnificent Seven" with Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen and a powerhouse cast - leave that one alone Hollywood!

Yeah, were is the real Indian? There are plenty of Indians of every nation that are also great actors. Why a white guy? This is insulting and if that white dude is going to be "Tonto", I won't be going to see this farce. I can't believe Johnny Depp is going along with this insulting portrayal of Indians.

Here's an article I found about Depp's feelings about the whole thing.

and a snippet of one of his answers
"My great grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek.'"

Hollywood couldn't find a Native American to play Tonto. I am going to assume nor that I will not pay to watch this movie. I'll wait for it to come to tv in four or five years because I'm sure there will be some dumb spin on a great old American story. . .

I'm with you on this. Couldn't find or didn't want to find. I am truly tired of roles that call for an Asian, an Indian, a Hispanic or a Black character being played by a white person. Too silly and insulting, to boot.

based on the pic ... looks like it will suck big time ... and where'd a guy get a rubber mask back then in cowboy days... couldn't they at least get a real native american indian ? and why depp ? the guy's white hat is too clean ...I don't want it to be like when I was watching as a kid ... just something better and more realistic ...

Johnny Depp playing Tonto is questionable but these people (studio heads) are going for the money - like when they had Elizabeth Taylor playing Cleopatra that insulted half the World at the time.

Lots of items in the Old West were made of rubber. Only back then it was called "gutta-percha" and "vulcanite".
