Madonna calls M.I.A.'s middle finger gesture "out of place"

(CBS) Madonna wasn't thrilled with M.I.A.'s middle finger stunt at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday.

The Queen of Pop was joined by M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj during performance of the new single, "Gimme All Your Luvin.'"

But she had no idea M.I.A. would flip the bird on stage and says she didn't even realize it happened until she was on her way out of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

In an interview on Ryan Seacrest's radio show Friday, Madonna said, "I was really surprised ... I wasn't happy about it."

She added, "I understand it's kind of punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity, it seemed negative ... It's such a teenager kind of -- in a way -- irrelevant thing to do in one respect, but on the other hand, there was such a feeling of love and unity there, what was the point? It was just out of place."
