(CBS) William Shatner and Carrie Fisher are engaged in a full-on web battle as to whose space-themed franchise is better, Shatner's "Star Trek" or Fisher's "Star Wars."

Shatner, who played Captain Kirk on "Star Trek," sent the feud into motion when he said his franchise was better than Fisher's in an online video.

Fisher, who played Princess Leia in "Star Wars," immediately responded back dissing "Trek" and challenged Shatner to a face-off in their respective costumes - Fisher's iconic metal bikini and Shatner's "Trek" uniform, which she dared him to squeeze into.

This of course brought on a response from Shatner, who claimed he wasn't overweight - just extra muscular - and jested that at least his old getup was made of stretchy material. He then moved on to talking about "Star Wars," which he admits had better special effects, but was missing other essential elements.

"In fact, everything about 'Star Wars' was special effects. I envy the special effects," said Shatner. "The only thing is you guys forgot about story and character and plot development - those kind of basic things."

The ball is in Fisher's court now.

Tell us: Which "Star" franchise do you think is better?

this is a tough one.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Both.

went to Star Wars in the theater at age 7! changed me forever -- but without Star Trek, there would be no Star Wars.

With The Grateful Dead, there would be no Phish

Without Bill Monroe, there would be no Jerry Garcia

That is how it works. evolution of media, music and movies.

Star Wars and Star Trek are both amazing!

I wasn't into the Star Trek thing when I was a kid. I like Star Wars movies that came out in the late 70's and early 80's. The Star Trek movies were alot better than the TV show in my opinion. My choice would probably be Star Wars 70 and 80's movies.

I did not watch Star Wars till several years after released, but
I followed the Star Trek series from the beginning and watched
William Shatner mature as an actor. I first saw him in a Twilight zone, episode and found him adorable and cute. I still think he is.
I only regret the passage of time and most likely not see him or
Leonard Nemoy in another episode,or the likes of George Takei who
is also a cutie, and too bad he's gay. Oh I will miss them.Star
Trek was the Greatest in my book.

"2001 A Space Odyssey" waa indeed a great ground breaking Sci-Fi movie that stands by itself. But the issue here is franchise. There were no sequels, TV, spinoffs or anything to compare it to either Star Wars or Trek. Again, they are both great and shouldn't be compared at all but if opinions matter, I'll go with Star Trek. It changed the way we thought about TV, science fiction, space travel, etc.

Star Trek started out a series, and went on to produce how many movies? Then it went out there and came back with another 4 series', each running a minimum of 4 years.

Star wars? Yeah, 7 movies, all animated television, no real pull there.

Both series' are great, I have all of the movies from both, BUT, if you look at staying power alone, Star Trek wins.

They should be a movie where Cpt Kirk meets princess Leia in out of space and then they make out. Also, C3PO and Zulu should make out.

" and jested that at least his old getup was made of stretchy material." I couldn't quite figure out if he was referring to Fisher's bikini or cosmetic surgery here.

It depends if you like sci-fi or Saturday matinees.

"Star Trek" was better sci-fi, particularly as many of the early episodes were actually adaptations of already existing sci-fi stories. "Star Wars" is a better Saturday matinee, although "The Empire Strikes Back" is a good movie.

The "science" in "Star Wars" is just plain laughable, so why would you even try to call it sci-fi? And "Star Wars" was actually, at least in part, BASED ON Westerns, so decrying the Western influence on "Star Trek" seems a bit strange.

When it comes to accurate SciFi and story lines, "2001: A Space Odyssey" tears both of the "Star" epics to shreds. Star Trek is the 'second most accurate and best story line. Star Wars was the most entertaining for juvenile minds. "The 1951 Howard Hawks-Christian Nyby film The Thing from Another World," is the most frightening SciFi film. E.T. is the most lovable. There are many hundreds of 'honorable mentions 'that I won't mention'. Why don't you treat yourself to a mind-feast and see one of the above...
